NOTIFICATION OF EXTENSION OF THE DEADLINE FOR PHASE OUT OF MACHINE-READABLE PASSPORTS FROM 31ST JANUARY 2021 TO 4TH APRIL 2022 BY THE REPUBLIC OF UGANDA

The Government of the Republic of Uganda started issuance of the International e-Passport to the citizens on 7th December 2018 and as a result stopped issuance of the Machine-Readable Passports. Government issued a notifi cation of a 2-year transition period to phase out the Machine-Readable Passports by 31st January 2021.

However, due to the restrictions that have been brought about by COVID-19 Pandemic, the deadline for phase of Machine-Readable Passports cannot be achieved without inconveniencing the public. We would like to notify the public of the decision to extend the phase out period from 31st January 2021 to 4th April 2022. The Government of the Republic of Uganda wishes to inform all citizens that the Machine-Readable Passports will continue to be used as a valid travel document alongside the new International e-Passport until 4th April 2022.

The Government of the Republic of Uganda calls upon the public to take note of the new deadline. All citizens who have not yet changed to the new international e-Passport are encouraged to use this window of opportunity to migrate to the new e-Passport to avoid any inconveniences related to the new deadline.

To apply, pay and schedule appointment, please log on to our e-Passport portal www.passports.go.ug In case of any clarification on this matter, please contact our Public Relations Office on telephones: 0800199003/0800199004 (Toll Free) or email: [email protected]

I have come across false allegations that Immigration released Hon. Kyagulanyi’s family travel details. This is not true. Failure by Hon. Kyagulanyi to easily identify the source of the information does not necessarily shift the responsibility of leaking the information to the Directorate of Citizenship and Immigration Control (DCIC). A look at the template, even without being critical one could easily attribute it to one of Hon Kyagulanyi’s service providers, not Immigration. Other than quickly rushing to accuse Immigration (DCIC) because it is a government entity and can make more news, Hon. Kyagulanyi should take time to look at the template and Identify the source or report the matter to police for Investigations to take place and establish the truth. The templates are clearly alien to the templates that immigration uses.
DCIC staff are well trained and they remain professional, and cannot release any private information of travelers because once stored, access must be authorized by very senior officers.
I urge Hon Kyagulanyi to exercise fairness to institutions that are on course of excellency like the DCIC. Hon. Kyagulanyi should be genuine, establish the real source of leakage of his information and apologize to the DCIC for wrongly attributing the leakage of private information to DCIC, whereas not.
I wish to reiterate DCIC’s commitment to remain professional and exercising impartiality without any political, religious or racial affiliation biases.
