This morning, the Chairperson Hon. Mariam Wangadya met the French Ambassador to Uganda H.E. Virginie Leroy. In her remarks, Hon. Wangadya said: "A key pillar in supporting us in delivering on our mandate is strategic partnerships with development partners like yourselves. We also work closely with state institutions, civil society organizations and communities across the country. Through constructive engagements like this one, dialogue, and a commitment to ensuring that human dignity for all remains at the center of public life."

She was flanked by Members of the Commission; Hon. Crispin Kaheru, Hon. Shifrah Lukwago and Hon. Lamex Omara, Director CILS Ms. Pauline Nansamba Mutumba and a section of support staff.

TRIBUNAL AWARDS Shs60m 📌
Our Human Rights Tribunal, sitting in Gulu today has awarded Shs60m to a son, whose father was beaten to death by seven soldiers on suspicion of him being a collaborator of the Lord's Resistance Army (LRA) then in Gulu. The complainant Okwera Alex brought the complaint against the Government holding it liable for the death of his father late Omona Martin. In arriving at this decision to award the said money in compensation, the Tribunal heard evidence indicating that the late Omona Martin was going to the market to buy food. He passed by a shop to buy a bottle of soda and pulled out a Shs50,000 note to pay for it. This prompted the shopkeeper to report him to soldiers on suspicion that he was an LRA (Joseph Kony's Lord's Resistance Army) collaborator. He was then beaten to death by seven soldiers.... Chairperson Uganda Human Rights Commission Pays Tribute to Late US President Jimmy Carter

On January 8, 2025, Adv. Mariam Wangadya, Chairperson of the Uganda Human Rights Commission (UHRC), met the U.S. Ambassador to Uganda, H.E. William Popp, at the U.S. Mission in Kampala. The meeting focused on advancing Uganda-U.S. collaboration in the promotion and protection of human rights.

During her visit, Chairperson Wangadya signed the official condolence book to honor the late U.S. President Jimmy Carter, who passed away on December 29, 2024.

In her message, she wrote:
“On behalf of the Uganda Human Rights Commission, I extend our deepest condolences to the US on the passing of President Jimmy Carter. His unwavering commitment to human rights, peace, and global justice will continue to inspire. May his legacy guide our shared pursuit of dignity and equality for all.”

She was accompanied by Commissioner Crispin Kaheru, Deputy Director Pauline Nansamba, and UHRC Public Affairs Manager Alex Bukumunhe.

This visit underscored the UHRC's dedication to the values championed by President Carter and its ongoing efforts to strengthen international cooperation in the advancement of human rights.

Message from the Uganda Human Rights Commission on the passing of the Chairperson of the KNCHR, Roseline Odhiambo Odede

The Uganda Human Rights Commission deeply regrets the passing of Roseline Odhiambo Odede, Chairperson of the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR). Her death, is a profound loss not only to Kenya but to the entire human rights community in East Africa and beyond.

I had the privilege of knowing Roseline as a fierce and unwavering advocate for justice, equality, and human dignity. Throughout her tenure as Chairperson of KNCHR, she led with compassion, integrity, and courage, championing the rights of the marginalized and relentlessly upholding the values of fairness and accountability. Her leadership leaves an indelible mark on all who worked with her, inspiring many to continue the fight for human rights.

Roseline’s contributions to the advancement of human rights are immeasurable. Her legacy will continue to guide us, and the work she initiated at KNCHR will remain a beacon of hope for those us dedicated to promoting justice and equality.

We extend our deepest condolences to her family, her colleagues, and all those whose lives she touched. Her passing leaves an irreplaceable void, but her spirit and commitment to human dignity will live on in the ongoing work of those who carry her vision forward.
