The Alliance for National Transformation (ANT) extends its deepest condolences to the families who lost their loved ones in the tragic King David School tour accident. We mourn the young lives and promising futures cut short and stand in solidarity with all those affected.

This tragedy highlights the urgent need to suspend and comprehensively review school tour guidelines before such trips resume under stronger safety and enforcement measures. It also underscores the broader road safety crisis in Uganda, calling for stricter enforcement of speed limits, thorough checks on driver competence and vehicle roadworthiness, and decisive action against corruption in road transport.

May the souls of the departed rest in eternal peace, and may God grant strength and comfort to the bereaved families.

PRESS STATEMENT BY THE ALLIANCE FOR NATIONAL TRANSFORMATION | 28 June 2026

We expresses our grave concern over reports that security personnel have surrounded the premises of Nation Media Group and disrupted the operations of Daily Monitor, NTV Uganda, Spark TV and KFM.

A free, independent, and professional media is a cornerstone of every constitutional democracy. Any action that restricts journalists from carrying out their work should be transparent, lawful, necessary, and fully consistent with the Constitution of Uganda and the country’s international human rights obligations.

We urge the Uganda Human Rights Commission, the Uganda Law Society, media associations, civil society organizations, and regional and international partners committed to the protection of press freedom to closely monitor developments and encourage adherence to constitutional and democratic principles.

We respectfully call upon all media institutions to continue discharging their professional responsibilities with independence, fairness, and fidelity to the public interest. A free press is indispensable to transparency, accountability, and informed public participation.

We call for the immediate restoration of broadcasting and publication services and reaffirms that any actions affecting media organisations should remain subject to the rule of law, judicial oversight, and constitutional safeguards.

The strength of a democracy is measured not by how it treats those who agree with it, but by how faithfully it protects the freedoms guaranteed to all.

PRESS STATEMENT BY THE ALLIANCE FOR NATIONAL TRANSFORMATION | 28 June 2026

The Alliance for National Transformation (ANT) expresses its deep concern regarding reports that Hon. Miria Matembe’s residence was searched by security personnel and that her whereabouts remain unknown to her family.

In the interest of upholding the Constitution, the rule of law, and public confidence in our institutions, we respectfully call upon the relevant authorities to clarify her status without delay. If Hon. Matembe is in lawful custody, she should be afforded all constitutional safeguards, including prompt access to due process and appearance before a competent court. If she is not in state custody, every effort should be made to establish her whereabouts and provide timely information to her family and the public.

Hon. Miria Matembe has served Uganda with distinction as a lawyer, former Member of Parliament, former Cabinet Minister, and advocate for integrity in public life. Regardless of political differences, every citizen is entitled to the full protection of the law and the guarantees enshrined in the Constitution.

ANT further calls upon the Uganda Law Society, civil society organizations and regional and international human rights institutions to follow this matter closely and support all lawful efforts aimed at establishing the facts and safeguarding constitutional rights.

Uganda’s democracy is strengthened when public institutions act transparently, respect due process, and uphold the rights and dignity of every citizen.

We join all those calling for clarity regarding Hon. Miria Matembe’s welfare and trust that this matter will be resolved promptly, lawfully, and in accordance with the Constitution.

STATEMENT BY THE ALLIANCE FOR NATIONAL TRANSFORMATION (ANT) ON THE ABDUCTION OF HON. ERIAS LUKWAGO

The abduction of the former Mayor of Kampala and Chairman of the PFF, Hon. Erias Lukwago, is unfortunate and deeply concerning. We condemn this act.

The growing climate of fear, intimidation, and political repression in our country is a dangerous path that history has shown leads to no good end.

We call upon the Government to immediately release Hon. Erias Lukwago or, if there is any case against him, to follow the due legal process as provided for under the law.

Uganda must be governed through constitutionalism, the rule of law, and respect for fundamental rights.
