The Government of Uganda is strengthening efforts to translate its commitments on durable solutions for refugees into concrete action.
Today, the Office of the Prime Minister opened a two-day Technical Workshop on Durable Solutions at the UNICEF Offices in Mbuya, Kampala, bringing together Government and partners under the Durable Solutions National Initiative.
The workshop is examining what is already in place, identifying key opportunities and barriers, and agreeing on practical actions to accelerate durable solutions in Uganda.
“We are here to examine what is already in place, identify the main opportunities and barriers, and agree on what needs to be done to accelerate durable solutions in Uganda,” said Hellen Bugaari, Director of the CRRF Secretariat at the Office of the Prime Minister.
Speaking on behalf of the United Nations, UN Resident Coordinator Leonard Zulu encouraged participants to approach the discussions with courage, openness and a solutions-oriented mindset, urging them to “think outside the box” in identifying pathways that can respond to the needs of refugees.
The 23–24 September workshop will help identify priority actions, stakeholder commitments, policy and institutional requirements, and resource needs. Its outcomes will inform the High-Level Dialogue scheduled for 7 October and subsequent implementation and monitoring.
Durable solutions require collective action - bringing together Government, humanitarian and development partners, regional actors, the private sector, refugees and host communities.
The workshop marks another step towards turning commitments into coordinated action and advancing lasting solutions for refugees in Uganda.

UN Resident Coordinator in Uganda, Mr. Leonard Zulu, has concluded a three-day field mission to Northern Uganda to assess how the United Nations Cooperation Framework 2021–2025 has contributed to communities and draw lessons to inform implementation of the new Cooperation Framework 2026–2030.

H.E. Tone Tinnes, Norwegian Ambassador to Tanzania and Uganda, paid a courtesy call on UN Resident Coordinator Leonard Zulu at the UN Office in Kampala. The engagement provided an opportunity to exchange perspectives and discuss areas of shared interest, with a focus on strengthening collaboration in support of Uganda’s development priorities.

The United Nations in Uganda extends its deepest condolences to the Royal Family, the people of Tooro Kingdom and the people of Uganda following the passing of His Majesty King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV.

His Majesty leaves behind a legacy of service to his people and a strong commitment to young people, culture, health, tourism and sustainable development.

The UN family was privileged to work alongside His Majesty on initiatives that reflected these commitments. Among them was the Ekyooto Ha Mpango cultural festival, supported by UNDP, which brought together culture, heritage, tourism and opportunities for local development. His Majesty also worked with UNAIDS as a Cultural Champion for HIV and AIDS among young people in Eastern and Southern Africa, using his voice and influence to advance the health and wellbeing of young people.

At this time of profound sorrow, we honour his memory and the contribution he made to his Kingdom, Uganda and the causes he championed.

We extend our heartfelt sympathies to the Queen Mother, the Royal Family, the Batooro, and all those mourning this immeasurable loss.

May His Majesty’s legacy of service, unity and commitment to his people continue to inspire generations to come.

The Office of the Prime Minister, together with the United Nations Resident Coordinator in Uganda, convened a high-level consultation with Ambassadors and Heads of Mission from Global South countries in Uganda on 27 August 2026 in Kampala.

The consultation explored how South-South and Triangular Cooperation (SSTC) can be leveraged to support Uganda’s development priorities, including the Tenfold Growth Strategy and implementation of NDP IV.

The dialogue focused on identifying priority areas for cooperation, exploring opportunities for bilateral and triangular partnerships, including the participation of Southern partners in the National Partnership Forum, and promoting the exchange of development solutions and best practices.

The United Nations Economic Commission for Africa convened stakeholders in Uganda for the inception workshop of the Accelerating Food Systems Transformation for Resilience to Climate Change in Africa project. The project aims to strengthen the capacity of selected African countries to enhance the resilience of food systems to climate change and climate variability, with a particular focus on livestock agri-food systems.

On 5 August 2026, the United Nations in Uganda, through UN-Habitat and with generous support from the Government of Japan, officially handed over the rehabilitated sections of the Kiteezi dumpsite to the Government of Uganda and the Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA).

For nearly three decades, Kiteezi served as Kampala's primary solid waste disposal site. Following the tragic landfill collapse of 10 August 2024, which claimed lives and devastated surrounding communities, urgent action was needed to restore safety and stability.

The rehabilitation project surpassed its original target, stabilizing 6.8 hectares of the landfill against the planned 4.3 hectares-covering nearly 47% of the site and significantly reducing immediate risks.

The works included embankment stabilization, terracing, controlled compaction, improved drainage, leachate management, access improvements, and preparation for landfill gas venting and leachate collection systems. Delivered under challenging conditions, the project demonstrates what strong partnerships can achieve.

This milestone reflects the shared commitment of the Government of Uganda, the Government of Japan, UN-Habitat and KCCA to building safer, more resilient and environmentally sustainable cities.

The Spotlight Initiative2.0 Joint Programme under the Gender for Development Uganda convened its 5th Spotlight Oversight Committee (SOC) meeting in Kampala, reaffirming our collective commitment to end and harmful practices in Uganda.

Co-chaired by Ms. Angela Nakafeero, Commissioner for Gender & Women Affairs, representing the PS, , and Ms. Kristine Blokhus, Representative, on behalf of the UN Resident Coordinator, the meeting underscored the importance of multi-sectoral partnerships in advancing Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights and delivering sustainable results for women and girls.
