In its 2013-2016 cooperation programme with Uganda, Belgium focuses its activities on education and health. In the education sector, secondary education is the target, especially Business, Technical and Vocational Training and quality teaching and learning. In the health sector the focus lies on strengthening service delivery of basic health care, through the support to the districts and the Priva

te-Non-For-Profit subsector. The Belgian development agency, BTC, mobilises the resources and its expertise to eliminate poverty in the world. BTC contributes to the efforts of the international community and works towards a society that provides present and future generations with sufficient resources to build a sustainable and fair world. Its staff members in Brussels, Uganda and other partner countries embody the commitment of the Belgian State and its development partners to international solidarity. They support more than 300 cooperation projects and programmes in some 20 countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America.

Across the Rwenzori and Albertine regions, 400 young people from 9 districts are turning practical beekeeping skills and start-up assistance into income and sustainable livelihoods, while contributing to biodiversity. 🌱

More honey, more income and more opportunities. Now that’s something worth buzzing about! 🐝

Meet Joseline Kabuwo and her group of 27 women and young people in Kabarole District, who are turning a coffee nursery enterprise into income and opportunity.

✅ Their first nursery season generated approximately UGX 15 million.
✅ After reinvesting, they expect to earn more than UGX 20 million from their second season.

Through our Decent Work and Social Protection Project, implemented in partnership with PRICON, we are training women and young people to gain skills, access markets, and build sustainable livelihoods in agriculture.

Access to healthcare should not depend on how much money you have when you fall sick.

Through our social protection programme, 3,148 people in the Rwenzori region have enrolled in Community-Based Health Insurance schemes, enabling them to access healthcare without bearing the full financial burden at once.

Working with KIDA and Kagando hospitals, we are strengthening financial protection, improving access to essential health services, and helping communities become healthier and more resilient.

Happy Friday from Nairobi! 🇰🇪

Changing perceptions of TVET starts with changing the conversation around skills.

Today at the 2nd East Africa Conference on Education, our colleague Sandra Abbo, Social and Behaviour Change Communication Intervention Officer, presented Enabel’s approach to shifting perceptions of TVET in Uganda through community engagement and trusted local networks.

And the results are already visible:
🔹 176,000+ people engaged face to face over the past two years
🔹 36% increase in student enrolment at Lugogo Vocational Training Institute
🔹 Gender stereotypes are being challenged in traditionally male dominated technical courses
🔹 Refugees and persons with disabilities are increasingly taking part in conversations around skills and opportunities

When communities are part of changing the conversation, young people can see TVET differently and discover new pathways to skills, employment and opportunity.

Education and skills development are regional priorities that call for shared learning and collaboration. 🌍

That is why we are proud to be part of the 2nd East Africa Conference on Education in Nairobi. Tomorrow, we will share Enabel’s experience in changing how people perceive Technical and Vocational Education and Training, and how this can open up pathways to employment and opportunities for young people through skills training in Uganda.

What if choosing a technical career was seen as a first choice, not a last resort?

Across Uganda, many young people and families have long viewed Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) as an option for those who did not succeed in academic education.
We’re taking the conversation into communities. Trained Parasocial Workers are engaging people face to face, helping young people and families better understand technical careers and see the opportunities they can offer.

And the conversation is reaching far and wide.
This year alone, more than 81,000 people have been reached:
📍 Busoga: 42,000+
📍 Kampala Metropolitan: 23,000+
📍 West Nile: 16,000+

Changing perceptions starts with changing the conversation, and sometimes with simply helping people see that there is more than one path to a successful future.
