This right here is the tragedy of our justice system—where humanity must beg through paperwork to be recognized.

A man on remand, not convicted, pleading for temporary release—not to escape justice—but to bury his wife. To perform one final act of dignity. One final act of humanity.

And yet, look at the process: stamped, forwarded, received, re-received. A conveyor belt of bureaucracy where compassion is treated like an application, not a principle.

Justice in Uganda has mastered procedure but forgotten purpose.

The law is not supposed to be a cold instrument. It is supposed to breathe. To feel. To respond to the human condition. Because what is justice if it cannot pause, even briefly, for grief?

This is not about one man. It is about a system that forces people to negotiate for their own humanity.

And that should disturb all of us.
