[Rice Cultivation Season has started]

The training and field activities under the Project for Sustainable Utilization Operation and Management of Irrigation System in Atari Basin Area (Atari TCP), have been on-going this month, in Atari Basin area and Ngenge irrigation scheme.
This month, two main activities which include making nursery bed and transplanting rice seedlings were conducted at the demonstration farm in the Ngenge Irrigation Scheme. 37 target farmers (20 from Ngenge and 17 from Atari) participated and were trained by Atari TCP on good rice cultivation practices and technologies.
Land leveling was done by laser leveler. Line transplanting was implemented at the spacing of 30cm x 15cm with transplanting rope. It aims not only to make weeding easier, and also to obtain higher yields.
From now on, the target farmers will practice the techniques and information they have learned through the hands-on training, at their paddy field.

[Agriculture show in Jinja]

On 11th/August 2022, the Government of Uganda through the MAAIF (Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries) officiated the opening of the agriculture exhibition in Jinja which marked the 28th National Agriculture show with the theme of Fostering resilient commercial Agriculture for industrialization and wealth creation.
The show provides a platform for local and foreign firms to showcase their innovations and technologies and find potential markets for their products and services.

For that reason, therefore, The JICA Atari irrigation project financially supported the Founder’s committee members of the Irrigation Water User’s Association to also join the exhibition to learn modern agriculture in Uganda. They can transform from being subsistence farmers and graduate to commercial agriculture production.

More lessons on breeding seeds and inputs, post-harvest management, fertilizers, water for crops and mechanization, pest and disease control, food value addition, animal husbandry, and fisheries were acquired by the farmers.

Among the exhibition participants was the PRiDe Project (PRiDe project Ⅱ Promotion of Rice Development) which showcased several rice seed varieties, Japanese techniques of growing rice, and food value addition (rice popping) among others.

We started third trial farm in downstream of the project construction site in Kween side. Despite the dry season, it is possible to grow rice in downstream because downstream can get enough water.

Project experts and farmers planted rice together. This is first time for almost farmers to adopt line planting method and adopt modern rice variety which is called WITA 9.

We hope that modern rice cultivation technologies will spread many farmers.
