There was a study done at Stanford University that said attitude is a better predictor of success than IQ. You can have aptitude, but if you don't have attitude, you won't get as far in life. The conclusion of the study was simply that you cannot be successful without the right attitude.
At its most basic definition, attitude is the way you think about something or someone. It starts with our thoughts, and our thoughts develop our attitudes. When you take in information, you are the one who chooses to think positively or negatively about it, and then your attitude will affect your words and actions. You can't hide a bad attitude; it will eventually come out! The Bible even says that out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks!
Really think about this for a minute: Attitude is the way we think. We can all see the same thing, but it's what we think that makes the difference and causes us to have a good or bad attitude.
We see this illustrated in scripture. In Numbers, the children of Israel were near their Promised Land. Moses appointed 12 leaders to go and spy out the land and bring back a good report. The 12 leaders all saw the same thing. Ten of them came back saying, "The land is good, but there are giants in the land. We look like grasshoppers in their eyes." They had a negative report that affected their attitude. Their negative report spread like wildfire throughout the camp and affected all of the Israelites. On the other hand, two of the spies came back with a different report. They saw the land, they saw the giants, they saw the walls, and said, "This looks like an opportunity for God to work!"
Sure enough, when all was said and done, those two spies, Joshua and Caleb, were the only two out of all those people to enter the Promised Land.
This should always be a reminder to us that if we find ourselves in the wilderness, so to speak, we need to check our attitudes. We need to check what we are thinking about. Don't have a "go back" attitude like some of the children of Israel. Think forward and look forward. Have a positive attitude of faith so that you can find success and embrace your Promised Land!
