NPIP Testing & Poultry Showmanship Clinic

We’re getting ready for another exciting 4-H poultry show season!

Recently, 17 youth brought their birds to our NPIP Testing and Showmanship Clinic, where they were able to complete important health testing while also getting hands-on help with their showmanship skills.

All chickens being shown through 4-H are required to be NPIP tested. This includes Pullorum-Typhoid testing, which uses a small drop of blood from the bird’s wing vein to test for Salmonella pullorum and Salmonella gallinarum. The birds were also tested for Avian Influenza (Avian Flu).

These tests are an important part of keeping our poultry projects healthy. They help protect not only each individual bird, but also the other birds they may come into contact with throughout the show season. Healthy birds help make for a healthy and successful 4-H poultry program!

A big thank you to Dr. Mickey Hall, Clemson University’s Small Flock Specialist, and Mr. Brad Smith with Livestock Poultry Health for conducting the testing and sharing their expertise with our families.

The day wasn’t just about testing! Dr. Hall and Abbeville 4-H’er Emma Uhall took time to work individually with our youth on their poultry showmanship skills. They made sure each participant had the opportunity to ask questions, practice, and get the help they needed to feel more confident heading into the show ring.

We love seeing our 4-H members learning from experts—and especially seeing our own 4-H’ers step up to share what they have learned with others.

Thank you to everyone who helped make this clinic possible. We are excited to kick off a new show season and can’t wait to see our youth and their birds in the show ring!

Dairy Showmanship Clinic Success!

What a great day of learning, leadership, and 4-H fun at our Dairy Showmanship Clinic!

We had 15 youth participate in the clinic, and we are especially excited that 12 of them are brand new to the Dairy Heifer Project! It was wonderful to see so many new faces getting hands-on experience and building their confidence with their heifers.

A huge thank you to Ms. Tina Horn and Ms. Amanda Lutz for sharing their time, knowledge, and expertise with our youth. We were also fortunate to have three Dairy Heifer Project veterans come back to help teach and work alongside our younger and newer participants. Watching these experienced 4-H'ers share their knowledge and passion with the next group of youth is one of my favorite parts of what we do through Clemson Extension and 4-H.

Each participant left with new skills, helpful tips, and plenty of things to practice at home with their heifers as they continue preparing for the show ring.

One of the most special parts of the day was seeing SC 4-H Heifer Project alumni return as parents, bringing their own children and their Heifer Project calves to learn new skills. Seeing the project come full circle—from 4-H members to parents supporting the next generation—is a wonderful reminder of the lasting impact of 4-H.

Thank you to our instructors, project veterans, parents, and youth for making the clinic such a success. We can't wait to see how much these youth and their heifers grow throughout the project!
