Recently several citizens have called the SO to report of numerous phones calls they have received from someone representing themselves as an employee at Duke Energy. The caller tells the customer they are past due on their power bill and to go to Family Dollar in Abbeville and load the past due amount on to a Red Card, or their power will be disconnected. Sheriff Watson advises all of these are telephone scams and warns if anyone in the community receives any calls of this nature, to hang up and call the sheriff’s department to file a report. Duke Energy does not use these type tactics to collect on past due balances and advises if anyone receives any calls of this nature to notify law enforcement immediately.

"Crime increases nearly 40% during the holiday season each year. As we prepare for the upcoming holiday season of Thanksgiving turkey and dressing, watching football on the couch, and searching for the ever so increasing black Friday specials, we need your help in stopping this trend. Sheriff Watson would like to offer the following tips:
1. Never leave valuable items in plain view in your vehicle.
2. Never shop or travel alone. Always have someone with you. Walk with friends, family or ask security or store personnel to es**rt you to your car.
3. Try not to visit an ATM after dark. Do all of your banking during the day.
4. If you are traveling, don't stop delivery of your mail or newspaper. Have someone you trust collect these items daily.
5. Always park and walk in well-lit areas.
6. When traveling, prepare. Be familiar with the route you will travel and your destination. Make sure your vehicle is in good working condition. Share your travel itinerary with someone you trust.
7. Be alert at all times! Be aware of who is walking near your or if someone approaches you for help, do not offer him or her a ride or let them inside your home.
Remember, the reason for the season, and let’s have a safe and joyous holiday season. Happy Holidays from Sheriff Ray Watson and the Abbeville County Sheriff’s Office.
