Thank you to everyone who helped organize and serve at the First Responders Appreciation Lunch. Your generosity made it possible to honor those who work every day to keep our communities safe. We are especially grateful to our deputies for their dedication, professionalism, and service. We also want to recognize our jailers for their commitment and the vital role they play in maintaining the safety and security of our detention facility. On May 14, 2026, the Wilcox County Sheriff’s Office was alerted to suspicious activity on Owensboro Road. Deputies responded to the area and discovered three large wrapped bundles, along with a drone, concealed in the wood line. Surveillance was established in the area.

Shortly thereafter, deputies were notified of a black SUV parked alongside the highway. As deputies approached the vehicle, the suspect fled from the area where the bundles and drone had been discovered and entered the SUV. This led to a brief vehicle pursuit into Rochelle, where the suspect was apprehended and arrested with assistance from the Rochelle Police Department and the Georgia Department of Corrections K-9 unit. A G***k 9mm pistol was recovered from the vehicle.

The contents of the three bundles included:
- 59.8 pounds of to***co
- 19.3 pounds of THC products
- 47 lighters
- 58 earbuds
- 49 charging cables
- 25 charging blocks
- one PlayStation controller
- 42 cell phones
- two iPads
- 38 AT&T SIM cards
- a soldering iron
- a lock and keys
- two phone case

Wilcox County Sheriff’s Office K9 Rookie to get donation of body armor

Wilcox County Sheriff’s Office, GA - K9 Rookie will receive a bullet and stab protective vest thanks to a charitable donation from non-profit organization Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. K9 Rookie’s vest was sponsored by Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. and will be embroidered with the sentiment “This gift of protection provided by Vested Interest in K9s, Inc.”. Delivery is expected within ten weeks.

Vested Interest in K9s, Inc., established in 2009, is a 501(c)(3) charity whose mission is to provide bullet and stab protective vests and other assistance to dogs of law enforcement and related agencies throughout the United States. This potentially lifesaving body armor for four-legged K9 officers is U.S. made, custom fitted, and National Institute of Justice (NIJ) certified. Since its inception, Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. has provided over 6,513 vests valued at $6.9 million to K9s in all 50 states, made possible by both private and corporate donations.

The program is open to U.S. dogs at least 20 months old, actively employed, and certified with law enforcement or related agencies. K9s with expired vests are also eligible to participate. There are an estimated 30,000 law enforcement K9s throughout the United States.

Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. accepts tax-deductible contributions in any amount, while a single donation of $1,050 will sponsor one vest. Each vest has a value of $1800.00, weighs an average of 4-5 lbs., and comes with a five-year warranty. For more information, or to learn about volunteer opportunities, please call (508) 824-6978. On Thursday, April 30, and into the early hours of Friday, May 1, Wilcox County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to an area known for the introduction of contraband into Wilcox State Prison. Deputies made contact with two vehicles parked in a secluded area. One vehicle attempted to flee, leading to a short chase that ended when the vehicle crashed. The other individuals fled on foot.

A search was conducted by Wilcox County deputies and a Georgia Department of Corrections K-9 unit in the area, which led to the three individuals being taken into custody. The individuals are charged with trafficking ecstasy, trafficking methamphetamine, possession with intent to distribute ma*****na, possession of Schedule II oxycodone, and introducing contraband.

Sheriff Jeff Wessel would like to thank the Abbeville Police Department and the Georgia Department of Corrections K-9 Unit for their assistance.

Adhering to burn permits is a critical responsibility, not a suggestion. These regulations are put in place to prevent uncontrolled fires, protect lives, and preserve property and natural resources.

The Georgia Forestry Commission has issued a Burn Ban that covers 91 counties. Current wildfire locations are showed on this map as well. Please refrain from burning outdoors. Follow all local guidance and restrictions and be extremely cautious with anything that could create a spark.
