For the second year in a row, VPSO deputies and their families helped beautify Vermilion by turning our focus to the Vermilion River and adjacent roadways. This year, our event was planned around the Love Our Waterways initiative spearheaded by Keep Louisiana Beautiful, under the leadership of Billy Nungesser Lt. Governor of Louisiana.

Today, VPSO deputies alone collected over 25 bags of litter in areas surrounding our river, and pulled litter and several large items from the Vermilion including a vacuum and large metal fan.

Several agencies took part in today’s efforts and we thank Keep Abbeville Beautiful, the Abbeville Fire Department, the Vermilion Chamber of Commerce, the Vermilion Parish Tourist Commission, the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries, and all volunteers who joined us.

Keeping Vermilion Parish beautiful is only possible when everyone does their part and today was a great example of what we can accomplish.

Sheriff Eddie Langlinais and VPSO are grateful to the Vermilion Chamber of Commerce, Acadian Ambulance and the community partners for showing their appreciation for the first responders who serve Vermilion Parish each day.

VPSO deputies and all of our fellow first responders, be sure to stop by Lafitte Drive In Park on Tuesday, September 22, between 11:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. to grab a burger and some ice cream!

After six years of dedicated service to the Vermilion Parish Sheriff’s Office and the people of Vermilion Parish, K9 Saar is officially retired.

Saar began her career with VPSO in June 2020 with her original handler, James Gleason. During her six years of service, she worked alongside three handlers: James Gleason, Deputy Anthony Frederick, and Deputy Brandon Coker.

Certified in narcotics detection and suspect apprehension, Saar served as an important member of our law enforcement team. Whether assisting deputies in the field, locating illegal narcotics, or helping apprehend suspects, she was always ready to go to work.

In her final year of service alone, Saar completed more than 300 hours of training in obedience, narcotics detection, tracking, article finds, and building searches, and assisted deputies with two felony apprehensions.

Saar also became a familiar face to many Vermilion Parish students. She frequently joined our deputies at school events and DARE programs, where she showcased her skills and demonstrated how choosing a life involving drugs and crime can lead to a negative encounter with law enforcement.

Now, after six years of protecting and serving, Saar gets to trade work for retirement with a familiar face. She has returned home with her very first handler, James Gleason, where she will enjoy her well earned retirement.

GUEYDAN DUCK FESTIVAL SAFETY AND PARKING NOTICE

As with last year’s Gueydan Duck Festival, the Vermilion Parish Sheriff’s Office will fly law enforcement drones throughout the festival to help ensure the safety and security of attendees.

VPSO will strictly enforce Vermilion Parish Police Jury Ordinance No. 2025 O 01 regarding the takeoff and landing of drones. The attached map shows the two-mile radius where drone pilots may not take off or land drones during festival hours from August 27 through August 29. Drone operators should plan accordingly and comply with all federal, state and local requirements.

As shared by the Gueydan Police Department, parking will not be allowed on the opposite side of LA Highway 14 from the festival grounds to prevent pedestrians from crossing the highway. Garland Street from LA Highway 14 to 13th Street and Canal Street will be closed to traffic, except for residents who live within the closed area.

Approved parking areas are highlighted in yellow on the attached parking map. Anyone who drives around barricades or parks within a closed area may be cited or towed.

Please follow all posted signs, barricades and directions from law enforcement. We appreciate everyone’s cooperation in helping make the Gueydan Duck Festival safe and enjoyable for all.

Sheriff Eddie Langlinais and the Vermilion Parish Sheriff’s Office extend our sincere appreciation to the VPSO deputies, Abbeville Police Department, Lafayette Police Department, and Louisiana State Police for working diligently to ensure the safety and security of everyone attending today’s historic announcement by Governor Jeff Landry, SpaceX President and COO Gwynne Shotwell, and Louisiana Economic Development Secretary Susan B. Bourgeois.

We also thank Acadian Ambulance and the Abbeville Fire Department for being on scene and ready to assist with any medical or emergency needs.

Your hard work, professionalism and dedication did not go unnoticed. Thank you for representing your agencies and our community with pride.
