Yesterday’s extreme heat created an unusual challenge on one of our local bridges.

During periods of high temperatures, steel bridges can expand, sometimes preventing movable bridges from raising properly. When that happened yesterday, the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (DOTD) requested our assistance.

Our crews responded by cooling the bridge, helping lower the temperature so it could safely raise and allow a waiting barge to pass.

We appreciate everyone’s patience while this operation was underway. We know it caused a temporary delay for motorists, but we were glad to assist our partners at DOTD in getting the bridge back into operation as quickly and safely as possible.

Not every call we respond to involves a fire or a medical emergency. Sometimes, serving our community means assisting our partner agencies with unique situations like this one. No matter the call, we’re always ready to help.

Thank you to DOTD for the opportunity to work together, and thank you to our community for your patience and support.

A little extra caution goes a long way in preventing fires and keeping everyone safe.

The Abbeville Fire Department is saddened to learn of the passing of former Captain Donald Hebert.

Captain Hebert dedicated more than two decades of service to the citizens of Abbeville, serving from 1971 to 1992 and playing an important role within our department. His commitment to protecting our community and serving alongside his fellow firefighters will not be forgotten.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to his daughter, Darlene Hebert Fontenot, and to all of his family, friends, and former colleagues during this difficult time.

Please keep the Hebert family in your thoughts and prayers.

Rest easy, Captain. Your service and dedication will always be remembered.

The Abbeville Fire Department is proud to announce that Interm Chief, Doris Langlinais, has officially been appointed the permanent Fire Chief following approval of yesterday's City Council meeting.

Chief Doris has dedicated years of service to the department and to the residents of Abbeville. Throughout his career, he has demonstrated a commitment to professionalism, teamwork, training, and protecting our community.

Being named Fire Chief is a reflection of his hard work, leadership, and dedication to the fire service. Under his leadership, the department will continue its mission of serving the community with pride, integrity, and excellence.

Please join us in congratulating Chief Doris on this well-deserved appointment.

We look forward to continuing to serve the residents of Abbeville together.
