SAINT PAUL, March 21, 1862
"L. Thomas
Adjutant General, Washington, D. C.:

"There are now within the limits of the State and mustered into the U.S. service one regiment of infantry, one company of sharpshooters, one battery of artillery, all of which are under marching orders for St. Louis. A second regiment of infantry will be ready to be mustered into U.S. service by the opening of navigation, when, by the direction of General Halleck, the regiment will be marched to St. Louis, excepting the three companies to be stationed at Forts Abercrombie, Ridgely, and Ripley, respectively. A detailed report will be sent you by letter.

The St. Cloud Democrat provides us with tidbit on June 20, 1861:

"In regard to the regulars still remaining at Fort Abercrombie, it is proposed to send of the companies forward immediately, and leave the other to be relieved by companies of the second regiment as soon as possible."

One of the reasons Fort Abercrombie was established by Congress is listed right here. This history marker is at the I94 rest area near Alexandria, MN. The brief history is a nice summation of the ox cart trade between Fort Garry, today's Winnipeg, and St. Paul, MN.

The St. Cloud Democrat gives us this tidbit about Fort Abercrombie on November 28, 1861"

"Capt. Lueg's Company, (E), of the 4th Regt,, left for Fort Abercrombie on Sunday. Col. Sanborn escorted him out of his quarters, with the remaining force of the Regt., (five companies) in gallant style..."

The "St. Cloud Democrat" of July4, 1861. had this tidbit from a soldier stationed at Fort Abercrombie. He received a letter from his brother, stationed in Alexandria with the Army of the Potomac:

"Now the entrance door swings wide open to all. No Legree cracks his lash within those walls over the tender flesh of a mother.

"The grated bars covering the dungeons, and the iron lattice work that darkens the rooms where the negroes used to huddle like beasts, have been torn open by the Massachusetts soldiers.

"The hooks, staples, chains, hobbles, etc., have been taken away by them and sent home, to convince the North that the truth has not been told...."

It was great day at Fort Abercrombie. Many visitors and lots of tours given today. Perfect weather for car club to stop...

It was great day at Fort Abercrombie. Many visitors and lots of tours given today. Perfect weather for car club to stop and visit. The car club was from the twin cities headed to Detroit Lakes. 16 members got a history lesson about the fort,as the enjoyed the site during a pit stop at a point of interest on the back roads.
