The rigorous process of monitoring the air for chemical agent is a 24/7 job, requiring rotating crews of operators.

On a typical day, lab technicians calibrate equipment prior to the arrival of Depot Area Air Monitoring System tubes. This calibration is verified prior to analysis by challenging the instrument with intentionally dosed agent samples or “spiked” samples. DAAMS tubes that have operated in the field for 12 hours are retrieved by plant monitoring technicians and delivered to the lab for analysis.

Where There’s Smoke, There’s Safety

Testing the Pueblo plant’s air monitoring system’s ability to detect chemical agent v***r ensures safety. Smoke, serving as simulated agent v***r, is released and timed to determine its path, as well as the time it takes to travel through the plant. Smoke testing guides the placement of Miniature Continuous Air Monitoring System, or MINICAMS, equipment in the most ideal locations to detect the unlikely release of agent in real time.
