FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Bathroom fire at Miller Jr. High cancels school early.

At 11:09:40 on May 21, 2026, the Aberdeen and Hoquiam Fire Departments were dispatched to a fire alarm activation at Miller Jr. High School located at 100 E. Lindstrom St. in Aberdeen. Dispatchers received additional reports of smoke in the hallways of the building and that students and staff were evacuating the building. Firefighters arrived on scene and quickly located and extinguished a small fire in a student bathroom. The fire was significant enough to activate the building’s sprinkler system which helped keep the fire from spreading before responders arrived, but the sprinkler system also caused some minor water damage to the building which caused school officials to cancel afternoon classes until repairs could be made and the sprinkler system brought back online.

A total of 12 firefighters responded on 1 command unit, 3 engines, 1 medic unit, along with 1 Assistant Chief. There were no injuries reported at the time of the incident. We applaud the Miller Jr. High staff for a safe and well-organized evacuation of students and teachers. Fire crews were on scene for about an hour before clearing the incident.

The Aberdeen Police and Fire Departments are investigating the cause of this fire which appears to have been intentionally started. Investigators are still working to determine the individual(s) that are responsible and will release further information as it becomes available.

Brothers and sisters will always walk in unison.
We are firefighters.
We are Aberdeen Firefighters.

There’s a quiet strength in moments like this — four sets of boots, one shared purpose. We don’t just walk together on the easy days… we walk together through smoke, chaos, heartbreak, and the unknown. Every step is a promise:
I’ve got you. You’ve got me. And we’ve got our community.

This job shapes us, binds us, and reminds us that family isn’t only the one you’re born into… it’s the one you stand beside when the tones drop.
Proud to be part of this brother and sisterhood. Proud to be an Aberdeen Firefighter.

Happy Monday evening from your Aberdeen Firefighters!

We hope everyone in our coastal corner got to soak up that rare, glorious, " are we sure this is Washington?" Kind of sunshine over the weekend. Some of us admired it from a safe distance... through a window... while doing more training. But hey, at least the vitamin D looked nice.

Speaking of training -- that's today's topic! When you join Aberdeen Fire, you've already survived years of training. But here's the plot twist: the training never stops. Ever. Fire and EMS are always changing, so we're always learning. It's like school, but with more fire, more teamwork, and fewer cafeteria tator tots ( Sorry Napoleon Dynamite, but it's true...). For those of you younger than 20, you may have to Google that reference. We're full of Dad jokes here at AFD.

Today found us up in Snohomish diving into Community Risk Reduction (another topic we'll chat about soon). Just another example of how far we travel and how often we train to keep our community safe and ready for anything.

And we do all of this while averaging 18 calls a day. Yep ------18. But we wouldn't have it any other way, because being at our best for you is what it's all about.

Thanks for supporting us, waving at the rigs, sending good vibes, and occasionally dropping off snacks and goodies ( we absolutely notice).

Stay safe out there, Harbor family --- sunshine or sideways rain!!

Today’s topic: community pride — also known as that moment when you look around and think, “Yep… this town really is something special.” And if you’ve ever seen a group of Aberdeen High School students proudly standing on top of a fire engine for their state send‑off, you know exactly what we mean.

One of the best parts about being an Aberdeen firefighter is the pride we have in our community. Especially when it comes to cheering on the success of our youth. Around here, when an AHS team heads to state, we don’t just say “Good luck!” — we roll out Ladder 10, park it, and let the kids climb up for that iconic Aberdeen send‑off photo. No lifting, no fancy hydraulics. Just solid ground, a shiny truck, and a tradition that’s become legendary in our little corner of the Pacific Northwest.

Most of your Aberdeen Firefighters grew up right here in Grays Harbor, so hometown pride isn’t optional — it’s practically a birthright. Today, we’re celebrating the Music Department, FBLA, and SkillsUSA as they head off to represent Aberdeen at state.

To all of you: every firefighter here at AFD is incredibly proud of you. Go show the state what Aberdeen is made of — talent, hard work, and just enough Harbor‑style grit to keep things interesting.

Good luck, Bobcats! Make us proud… or prouder. The bar’s already pretty high.

Good evening fellow Harborites!

If you caught yesterday's post about the generous donation Aberdeen Fire Department received from Peak Credit Union, then you already know we're wasting no time putting it to good use. If you didn't see it...well, you're missing out--and you should absolutely go check it out.

Today's topic: Public Education.
Yes, the glamorous side of the fire service you never see on TV.

Our Fire Service Specialist had the privilege of speaking at Miller Junior High's Future Options Day, where we got to talk shop with the next generation of firefighters, EMTs, Paramedics and maybe even a few Future chiefs (aim high, kids).

Students learned that firefighting isn't just "put the wet stuff on the red stuff," as fun as that line is. In reality 75-85% of our calls are medical, and the rest can be anything from vehicle accidents to rescues to hazardous materials responses. Firefighters really are Jack's and Jills of all trades--minus the nursery rhyme injuries.

This event was one of many opportunities we take to educate our community about what we do and why it matters. Public education is a huge part of public safety, and spending time with curious young minds is one of the best parts of our job.

A big thank-you to the students, staff and the 30 + other professionals who came out to help guide our youth toward their future careers. We had a blast sharing knowledge--and maybe inspiring a few future Harbor heroes along the way.
