Under the 4-H mission of positive youth development, we balance personal responsibility with educational opportunity. We acknowledge that some missed deadlines are mistakes, however, we also need the individual/family to recognize the severe importance of completing tasks by – or prior to – the posted deadline.

Spotlight on a Legacy of Leadership! 🍀🎡

If you’ve spent any time at the fairgrounds, you know that the best traditions are the ones passed down through the generations. Today, we are featuring a leader whose roots in our program run deep — from his days as a Cloverbud to now leading the way as a volunteer for both 4-H and our Fair Board: Dylan Frey!

For Dylan, volunteering isn't just a hobby; it’s a family legacy. Following in the footsteps of his father (a leader since the 90s!) and his grandfather before him, he is now setting the same incredible example for his own son, Levi.

A Quick Q&A with Dylan:
On the Power of Connection: "It's so much fun to see our members build connections with others. The friendships made with other 4-H'ers can be lifelong."

The "Aha!" Moment: He loves seeing growth in Public Presentations. Seeing members step out of their shells and master a skill they’ll use for the rest of their lives is the most rewarding part of the job.

His Advice to You: If you're thinking about volunteering, his message is simple: "Do it." Being a role model and guiding members as they become better people is an experience like no other.

In one word, he describes being a leader as: REWARDING. 🌟

Thank you for your tireless energy, your commitment to our youth, and for keeping the spirit of the Brown County Fair and 4-H alive and well!

🐄🐑 Animals in 4‑H Online Are NOW OPEN! 🐇🐓

Families can now enter their animals in 4‑H Online!

⏰ Deadline: May 31, 2026 - Member enrollment, animal nomination, DNA submission for State Fair participation, YHL & YLL Completed, RFID Tags and/or leg bands picked up from Brown County 4-H Office.

⚠️ Important: Any animal not entered by the deadline will NOT be eligible to exhibit in the 4‑H Division at the South Dakota State Fair.

Helpful reminders when entering animals:
✅ The “Tag” field is NOT the RFID # — enter the animal’s additional tag there

✅ RFID tags must be 15–16 characters

✅ Rabbits: If the gender is unknown, enter the rabbit twice (once as each gender)

✅ Poultry: The leg band number entered is final and must match all fairs — adding band color is recommended

✅ Returning animals (dairy cattle, dog, dairy goat, horse, companion animals, poultry, rabbits) must be re‑activated each year

✅ Horses: A recent photo is required (¾ view preferred; include brand if applicable)

📣 Don’t wait until the last minute — log in, double‑check your entries, and stay fair‑ready!

Today, we’re sharing the story of a leader who is passionate about passing down the 4-H legacy to the next generation! Thank you Lynn!!

Meet Our Volunteer! 🍀
Q: What inspired you to become a 4-H volunteer?
"I wanted to keep our club going! Having been in 4-H myself growing up, I wanted my own kids and all the youth in our club to have those same life-changing experiences and the chance to expand their skills."

Q: What is your favorite memory or 'proud moment' with your club?
"I have a few! I loved seeing how hard the kids worked helping SPURS fix up their Horse Memorial Garden. Another great moment was during our road ditch clean-up a landowner actually stopped to thank the kids and gave them money for ice cream! Also, last year we did a club rocket project; seeing the joy on their faces as they launched them to see how far they’d fly was unforgettable."

Q: How have you seen a child grow through 4-H?
"The growth in confidence is amazing. I’ve seen kids go from being shy to comfortably giving demonstrations and speaking in front of groups. They aren’t afraid to make motions or discuss new ideas anymore, and seeing those lasting friendships form is the best part."

Q: Describe the 4-H volunteer experience in one word:
REWARDING. ✨

Q: What would you say to someone considering becoming a leader?
"You truly have an impact on these members' lives. Remember, 4-H isn't just about livestock, it’s cooking, sewing, public speaking, and so much more. Plus, you don’t have to do it alone; you can always have an assistant leader by your side!"
