A police-escorted caravan will travel through parts of Southern Pines, Aberdeen and Pinehurst between 4-5 pm this afternoon to protest the killing of George Floyd, whose death in police custody has sparked a national outcry. The protest is being organized by the N.C. Impact Coalition.

The caravan will travel from the Southern Pines Armory Optimist ballfields to U.S. 1, south to Aberdeen, turning back north on N.C. 5 to Pinehurst, and across Morganton Road.

Lakisha Womack, a local educator who co-founded the coalition, said the group felt a caravan would minimize the protestors’ risk of exposure to the coronavirus.

“We want to show the right way to address the issue,” Lakisha Womack said Monday in a phone interview. “With this being a retirement community, we can’t afford to have COVID-19 run rampant here.”

Contract tree crews from Lewis Tree Service will be performing vegetation maintenance work around the Duke Energy Progress power lines along 4 miles of circuits that serve part of Aberdeen.

This work will include clearing the power lines along part of NC Highway 5, as well as Fields Drive, Saunders Avenue, Taylor Street, Aberdeen Street, and the surrounding area.

This work on these 4 miles of circuit is expected to be completed by the middle of June, weather permitting.

Trees growing near power lines can cause fires and be an electrical hazard to the public. During storms, trees and tree limbs can fall into power lines and cause power outages.

If you have any questions, please contact Duke Energy at 1-800-452-2777.

Happy Earth Day!🌎 Let us know how you are enjoying the outdoors on this Earth Day or how you are helping our planet.

Some tips on ways to help every day in your home:

💧 Save water by checking for leaks at home. Slow, silent leaking toilets can waste 200+ gallons of water per day. Here is how you can check your toilet for leaks: https://bit.ly/2Vv3ONR

♻️ Recycle correctly in your brown container - #1 & #2 plastics, cardboard, paper, and aluminum cans: https://bit.ly/2VQM7Hf

🌧 Keep storm drains clean from trash and pollution. Clogged storm drains can cause flooding in roadways. Trash and pollution in the storm drain enters into local streams and can be harmful to animals, people, & the environment.

04/15/2020

Effective Monday, April 13, 2020, Town of Aberdeen building inspectors will discontinue in-person interior building inspections for occupied commercial and residential properties until further notice. This includes mechanical, hot water heater change outs, and any other inspections that require building inspectors to enter the property. These changes are being made in response to the COVID-19 pandemic in order to protect the health of Town staff and the public and are consistent with guidance provided by the NC Department of Insurance on the use of Live Remote Inspections.

Building inspections are still required and can be accomplished remotely via live FaceTime, Duo for Android, photos, and paper documentation scanned and emailed to Town staff. Arrangements for the inspection can be made when calling to schedule the inspection. You will be contacted by an Inspector if more information is needed and/or to establish a time to perform the remote inspection.

All new construction building inspections will continue to be completed in-person. The Town of Aberdeen requests, however, that no other persons be on site during these inspections.

PLEASE NOTE: Some types of inspections may not be able to be completed by remote inspection, based on assessment of the video call by your inspector. If this happens, the inspector may ask for further documentation from you attesting compliance.

Please visit the Town's website, www.townofaberdeen.net, for additional information.
