Gregg-Hamilton House

Mississippi Historic Landmark Built in 1850, Gregg-Hamilton, the home of Lynnwood and Traci Kent, is named for two historic fugures that have called it home.

Mary Frances Garth-Gregg, widow of fallen Confederate General John Gregg, purchased this home close to his final resting place and lived the rest of her life here. Dr. Charles Granville Hamilton, minister, state legislator, poet and author, wrote the majority of his poems and prose at the home. The home was used safehouse for slaves on the Underground Railroad prior to the Civil War. A cell in the basement of the home was used to hold Union prisoners during the Civil War.

Haunting of Aberdeen is quickly approaching and things are hopping here at Gregg-Hamilton!
The Sunken Garden , on the north side of Gregg-Hamilton, is gradually taking shape, and already a figure has been mapped by our SLS App.
That property was owned by Mollie Gregg, but not the Hamiltons (although the Hamiltons did own the part closest to the house). In the years after Mollie’s death, the land around her house was divided and sold. A house was built on this site. It was divided into apartments, with many tenants passing through. And many years ago a man “unalived” himself there. Eventually the house was demolished, leaving a deep scar on the landscape.
Our plan is to create peace and beauty in a place of trauma.
