Aberdeen Fire Rescue Responds to Rooftop Air Conditioning Unit Fire
Aberdeen, SD – On May 28, 2026, at approximately 9:33 a.m., Aberdeen Fire Rescue was dispatched to the Alonzo Ward Hotel (104 S. Main Street) for a reported fire on the roof.
Fire crews arrived on scene to find smoke and flames coming from the roof. Crews determined the fire originated from a rooftop air conditioning unit. Electrical power to the unit was shut off, and the fire was quickly extinguished using portable water can fire extinguishers.
No damage occurred inside the structure. Crews remained on scene to ensure there were no additional hot spots. One civilian sustained injuries and was evaluated by Aberdeen Fire Rescue paramedics before being transported by private vehicle to a local hospital for further care. The exact cause of the fire remains under investigation.
