It’s with great sadness that we share the passing of Raymond Briggs. Raymond’s best-known work is The Snowman, a pioneering picture book, a radical and beautiful innovation: a picture book without words.

Although The Snowman is his most famous creation, Raymond leaves behind a treasure trove of work – from his hilariously grumpy Father Christmas to the graphic novel based on his parents’ lives, Ethel and Ernest, his characters reach far and wide.

“Raymond was a brilliantly observant, funny storyteller, honest about how life is rather than how adults might wish to tell it to children. A kindness, integrity, and generosity run through all his books.

“And so in life: Raymond was a generous, unjealous spirit who was a pleasure to work with, as well as to visit in his Suss*x cottage and experience his teasing genius in its home. He was funny! He made us laugh a lot. I will miss him. All of us who had the privilege of working with him will miss him.

“Raymond was unique. He has inspired generations of creators of picture books, graphic novels, and animations. He leaves an extraordinary legacy, and a big hole.”

in 1947, prolific science fiction writer Octavia Butler was born. Butler’s work not only infused science fiction with the spiritual and metaphysical realities of Blackness, but also placed Black girls and women at the core of storylines. Her works, including “Parable of the Sower,” “Kindred,” “Blood Child,” and “Mind of My Mind” are critical pieces of American science fiction literature.

Known for evocative prose, Butler wrote issues of race, s*x, power and, ultimately, what it means to be human into her work. She was the first science fiction author to be granted a MacArthur fellowship and the first Black woman to win Hugo and Nebula awards. Today Butler’s influence spans literature, genres, and media, with some of her works currently being developed by television and streaming services.

Butler said of her work, “When I began writing science fiction, when I began reading, heck, I wasn't in any of this stuff I read. I certainly wasn't in the science fiction. The only Black people you found were occasional characters or characters who were so feeble-witted that they couldn't manage anything, anyway. I wrote myself in since I'm me and I'm here and I'm writing. I can write my own stories and I can write myself in.”

Happy Juneteenth!

At yesterday's Upper Bay Juneteenth Festival in Darlington, there were many wonderful activities, including a few s. Several local authors spoke about their work, including Brittany J. Thurman and Dr. Charles Chavis.

Brittany J. Thurman is the author of "Fly." From the publisher: "Pure joy and the power of community radiate from this sweet picture book about a young Black girl’s perseverance and confidence in following her double Dutch dreams."

Dr. Charles L. Chavis is the author of " The Silent Shore: The Lynching of Matthew Williams and the Politics of Racism in the Free State," which provides a definitive account of the lynching of twenty-three-year-old Matthew Williams in Maryland, the subsequent investigation, and the legacy of "modern-day" lynchings.

Thank you, Mx. Thurman and Dr. Chavis for sharing your work with us!

“There is no place you or I can go, to think about or not think about... the absences of slaves. There is no suitable memorial, or plaque, or wreath, or wall, or park, or skyscraper lobby. There’s no 300-foot tower, there’s no small bench by the road... and because a place doesn’t exist... the book had to.” - Toni Morrison on her award winning novel, 'Beloved.'

in 1988, Toni Morrison won a Pulitzer Prize for 'Beloved.' The novel, which was set in the years after the Civil War, was inspired by the life of Margaret Garner, an African American woman who escaped enslavement in Kentucky in late 1856.

The novel addressed themes including mother-daughter relationships, the psychological effects of enslavement, manhood, and universal pain. Beloved was adopted as a 1998 movie of the same name starring Oprah Winfrey and directed by Jonathan Demme. Morrison explained her motivation for writing was to memorialize African men, women and children who were forcefully brought to the United States.
