Let’s say your child throws blocks across the room.

You’ve already said, “Blocks are for building.”

Then another block flies.

And this is usually the moment we want to say:

“That’s it. No TV for a week.”

I get it.

You’re tired.
You want the behavior to stop.
You want them to understand.

But when the consequence is too big, your child often stops thinking about what they did.

Now they’re thinking:

“That’s not fair.”
“Mom is so mean.”
“I’m so mad.”

And the lesson gets lost.

A reasonable consequence is one your child can connect to the moment.

So instead of:

“No TV for a week.”

Try:

“Blocks are not for throwing. I’m putting them away for now. We can try again later.”

Or:

“If your body needs to throw, we can throw soft balls into the basket.”

Reasonable doesn’t mean weak.

It means simple, close, and clear enough to teach.

The goal is not to make them feel bad enough to stop.

The goal is to help them learn what to do next time.

Save this for the next time the consequence feels bigger than the moment.
