48 hours prior to Winter Storm Cora sweeping across Texas, spawning freezing temperatures, snow, and ice, two of the seven Mission Ready Packages (MRPs) from 111th EN BN, spun up to answer the call for the Lone Star State and its citizens.

Quartered at their respective home station armories, located on Dyess AFB (Abilene,TX) & Camp Bowie (Brownwood, TX), Roughneck Soldiers readily postured as a reserve force, prepared for decisive movement. The deliberate actions of these Soldiers provided State emergency managers and the Texas Military Department the readiness & ability to retain the initiative to protect life & property across 62 county’s.
Appreciate the rapid support & effective response!

The Governors Twenty is a marksmanship competition that recognizes the top shooters within the Texas Military Department, comprised of TX Army, Air, and State Guard Personnel.

Only the most distinguished and accomplished shooters from the pistol, rifle, machine gun, and sniper disciplines will obtain the district honor to be tabbed.

More importantly, every Service Member who competed, returns the knowledge & proficiencies gained back to their Unit, increasing the skill & readiness of the entire force.

This last weekend, 111th EN BN, HHCs CPT Brian Roach was 1 of 8 who secured the Governors Twenty tab out of 141 competitors during the Pistol event! Way to represent!!!

…I will set the example by keeping myself physically fit and mentally tough.
I will strive to sharpen my Sapper skills and the skills of those I support.

Congratulations to SSG Walker of 454 EN CO & Sapper Class 03-25.
You have Earned the Right! Tabbing as Sapper does not set you apart. Enduring hardships, refusing to quit on yourself & your team, and leading as an example does. Influence where others will not.

Sappers Lead The Way!

* Grateful for those in the organization that enabled him to bring the hardware back to Texas!

From our Staff & Commander Team, thank you to all our Roughneck family!

This Thanksgiving, we pause to express our appreciation for your service and sacrifice. You embody the strength, resilience, and selflessness that inspire the very community you serve.

While many gather with loved ones, let us express a deliberate moment of gratitude to those currently serving far from home, often in challenging conditions, so others may enjoy the blessings of peace and security.

On this day of thanks, please know how deeply you are appreciated. We honor not only your dedication but also the support and sacrifices of your families, who stand behind you every step of the way. Your diligence reminds us of the true meaning of service.

May this season bring moments of joy, connection, and hope, wherever you may be. May you be blessed with the strength and camaraderie that bind us together.

In loving memory of a brave soul, we honor the life and legacy of SSG (Retired) Tina Darby, who honorably deployed to Afghanistan in 2008. After a brave and inspiring battle with cancer, she is now at peace, without any suffering.

As a dedicated Soldier, she touched the lives of so many both in uniform and at home. To the very end, she displayed resilience and tenacity, qualities that defined her life and service.

Our hearts are heavy, but we will remember her legacy and keep her spirit alive. Please keep her family in your thoughts during this difficult time, and let us stand together, as she fondly thought of the Rougnecks as “family”.

Rest in peace. Your watch has ended; your impact remains forever. 🕊

If anyone has any pics or memories of Tina, please feel free to post/comment.

The ACES award was conceived in concept and initiated in 1995 by COL (Ret) Leon “Moose” Albin.

Colonel Albin started his Army career in 1932 in the National Guard. He was rapidly promoted to the grade of Master Sergeant; Receiving a commission as a Second Lieutenant, Corps of Engineers at the start of the Second World War, he served with distinction in the Pacific Theater of operations and was recognized as one of the most capable combat engineers to come out of that conflict.

Following his retirement from military service and then entry into Department of the Army Civilian service during the Vietnam War, his Army engineering achievements continued.

Colonel Albin remained a tireless volunteer Director with the AEA until his death in October 1998.

Colonel Albin’s considerable time as an Engineer Commander convinced him that a unit’s reputation and combat effectiveness will depend upon the abilities of the Squad Leaders to accomplish the mission and taking care of the Soldiers.

The Army Combat Engineer Sergeants (ACES) award is a component of the U.S. Army Engineer Regimental Award Program and is administered by the Army Engineer Association (AEA). This award is an annual recognition for an Engineer Squad
Leader deemed to be the BEST in the Battalion.

After reviewing nominations, and in the spirit of COL Albin, have selected & awarded off of reputation, performance, & leadership ability.

On behalf of LTC Meller & I, we proudly present the FY24 ACES Award - Best Squad Leader, for the 111 EN Roughneck BN, SSG Casas (454 RCC).
