Rural healthcare professionals have faced so many challenges in recent years, including increased threats from Washington. Yesterday at Virginia Highlands Community College, I held a roundtable to discuss the challenges that rural communities face from workforce needs to maternal healthcare access.

I am also thrilled to announce that Virginia Highlands Community College will receive Virginia's first Rural Health Transformation Award to expand their Licensed Practical Nursing program. This investment is about more than healthcare, its about economic opportunity and quality of life.

For too many families across Southwest Virginia, a dental appointment isn't a given. It's out of reach — too expensive, too far, too complicated.

The Appalachian Highlands Dental Clinic in Abingdon exists to change that reality for families in this region. Their recent expansion means more patients served and more healthcare providers in this region. This is workforce development + healthcare access.

Yesterday I had the solemn honor of speaking at the Virginia State Police Law Enforcement Memorial Service. I come from a law enforcement family. My father was a career law enforcement officer. When I was a kid, I didn’t fully understand the sacrifice it took for him to do the job. It wasn’t until I was older and entered my own law enforcement career that I began to understand the sacrifice it takes from you and your family — the commitment to putting the greater good before self.

With grief and deep respect in my heart, I honor all our fallen State Police personnel. Their watch has ended, but their memory will live on in this Commonwealth. To surviving loved ones and the greater VSP family, thank you for your sacrifice, and may we never forget our brave State Police heroes.

When working families are forced to come to work sick or choose between caring for a sick child and losing a paycheck, it's bad for them, their families, and the businesses that depend on healthy, reliable employees.

That's why today I signed paid sick leave into law for Virginia.

As a former federal law enforcement officer, I share Virginians' concerns about federal immigration enforcement officers wearing masks on American streets — undercutting basic expectations of accountability, sowing fear and confusion, and eroding public trust.

Kids afraid to get on the school bus. Workers not showing up to their jobs. Neighbors scared to go to the grocery store.

That's what aggressive federal immigration enforcement is doing to Virginia communities.

Today, I signed Executive Order 16 to:

🔹 Ban ICE from using state property as an operations base
🔹 Require federal immigration officers to show warrants before accessing state property
🔹 Launch a Know Your Rights website for Virginians affected by federal immigration enforcement to access resources and guidance
🔹 Provide guidance for employees at courthouses, schools, polling locations, and healthcare facilities when federal officers attempt to conduct immigration enforcement

More than 1 million Virginians have no access to paid sick days. That changes now.

Today I signed paid sick leave into law for Virginia — which means:
✅ 1 hour of paid sick leave for every 30 hours worked with up to 5 paid sick days per year
✅ Full-time AND part-time workers covered

No one in Virginia should have to choose between their health and their paycheck.
