Dear Abington Families,

We are excited to welcome our students back for another school year! As we get ready for the first day, I wanted to share a quick note about school bus transportation.

This year, we are excited to begin working with our new transportation partner, NRT. One of the things that will help make this transition smoother is that over 80% of our previous bus drivers are returning to drive for Abington. That familiar face behind the wheel will be a welcome sight for many of our students and families.

As we all know, the first few weeks of school can take a little time to get into a rhythm. Bus routes may run slowly as drivers, students, and families settle into new routines. Please expect delays during the first few weeks.

We ask that students be at their bus stop at the time indicated in the letter that accompanied their bus tag. Being ready and waiting will help our drivers keep routes moving as smoothly as possible.

Thank you in advance for your patience, flexibility, and understanding as we work through those first few weeks together. We appreciate your partnership and are looking forward to a wonderful start to the school year!

Dr. Felicia Moschella
Superintendent of Schools

🏫APS Back to School - Health & Medical Checklist

Helping Your Child Have a Safe & Successful School Year

As you prepare for the new school year, please take a few minutes to review the checklist below. Completing these steps before school begins helps ensure that your child’s health and medical needs can be safely and effectively supported throughout the school year. All required health forms and information may be found on the APS website under 'Students and Families'.

✅ BEFORE SCHOOL STARTS

☐ Update Emergency Contacts
Make sure the school has current emergency contact information, including updated phone numbers, in the Aspen Parent Portal

☐ Review Immunizations
Confirm that your child’s immunizations are up to date and meet Massachusetts school requirements

☐ Request Updated Medical Orders
If your child requires medication, treatments, or other health-related accommodations at school, please request updated orders from their healthcare provider.

☐ Notify the School of Health Changes
Please let the school nurse know about any new or significant medical conditions, diagnoses, allergies, or changes in your child’s health. The APS Allergy Modification Request Form must be completed and submitted to the school nurse annually.

❤️ HEALTH PLANS

Updated Medical Orders
Please obtain updated medical orders before the start of the school year from your child’s healthcare provider.
You may use the school’s provided forms or your healthcare provider’s own medication/medical order form, as appropriate.

Your child may need an Emergency Action Plan or other medical plan at school if they have:
☐ Allergies - allergy action plan.pdf
☐ Asthma - asthma action plan.pdf
☐ Seizures - seizure action plan.pdf
☐ Diabetes – Please obtain updated orders from your child’s endocrinologist.
☐ Other Medical Conditions

💊 MEDICATIONS & SUPPLIES

☐ Parental Consent
Complete the required parental consent forms for prescription medications.

☐ Original Pharmacy Containers
All prescription medications must be provided in the original pharmacy-labeled container and clearly identify your child’s name, medication, dosage, and instructions.

☐ Check Expiration Dates
Make sure all medications are current and have not expired. Please request refills from your pharmacy as needed.

☐ Over-the-Counter Medications
For students at Abington Middle School and Abington High School, complete the required parental consent for over-the-counter medications.

Abington Public Schools is once again participating in the Community Eligibility Provision (CEP) of the National School Lunch Program. This special provision means that families are no longer required to complete a meal benefit application, and all our students have access to breakfast and lunch at no cost.

Fee waivers for transportation, athletics, and other applicable areas will again primarily be based on Direct Certification for the new school year.

Direct Certification is the process by which school districts certify students who are members of households receiving assistance from SNAP, TANF/TAFDC, or FDPIR, as eligible for free meals without further application. Direct Certification is based on information provided by the state agencies administering these benefit programs.

To apply for Direct Certification, please visit: https://dtaconnect.eohhs.mass.gov/ and apply for benefits. All families who are Direct Certified will be sent a Community Eligibility (CEP) information sharing form in the coming weeks.

Bus applications, which may be found on our website, MUST be completed and submitted for every student who will require transportation in 2026-2027, even if transportation is mandated based on grade level and distance or if the fee is waived based on Direct Certification.

The deadline for all bus applications is July 1.

If you do not qualify for the Direct Certification benefit and are experiencing financial hardship, please complete the district's hardship application to be considered for assistance with district fees. This form can be found on our website in the Transportation section or by clicking here.
