This past weekend our overnight shift responded to a violent assault on Bedford Street. The victim reported being attacked and beaten with a handgun. This was a very targeted attack.

An exhaustive search took place but the suspect was not located. The overnight shift did an incredible job gathering intelligence that would aid in a successful arrest.

Over a 3 day span our detectives division worked tirelessly, utilizing law enforcement partners on Cape Cod and the State Police. Yesterday afternoon Detective Sergeant Lynch arrested Jhonatan Rodrigues, a 26 year old Hyannis man, in Brockton. Rodrigues is expected to be arraigned later today on the following charges:

Ch 265 S 15A - A&B Dangerous Weapon
Ch 275 S 2 -Threat to Commit a crime, To Wit Murder
Ch 269 S 10(a) - Firearm, Carry Without License
Ch 272 S 53 - Disorderly Conduct

The Abington police department remains committed to keeping our community safe.

All suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

We’re proud to echo our friends at Abington Veterans' Services in thanking Martin's Restaurant for hosting another incredible Veterans Breakfast this morning. Their continued generosity brings our community together month after month to honor those who served.

A special thank-you to our very own Community Care Clinician, Colleen Coakley, who was the guest speaker at today’s event—highlighting the resources and support available for our Veterans and their families.

It was also great to see the Veterans’ Service Officers from Hanson, East Bridgewater, Hingham, and Abington joining together to share information on benefits and upcoming Veterans Day events.

📅 Reminder: Martin’s Veterans Breakfast is held the first Wednesday of every month at 10:00 AM.

The Abington Police Department is proud to stand with our Veterans today and every day. 💙

🎃✨ A Halloween Safety Spell and message from the Abington Police Department ✨🎃

By moonlight’s glow and pumpkin’s gleam,
We cast a spell, a safety theme!
For ghouls and ghosts who roam tonight,
Stay safe and smart beneath the light.

Reflective gear, a glowing charm,
Keeps trick-or-treaters safe from harm.
Stick with friends, don’t go alone,
And stay where streetlights brightly shone.

Beware strange treats or opened snacks,
Only take from trusted packs!
Cross with care, look left and right,
Keep watch for cars throughout the night.

So hear this spell from APD,
A safe Halloween’s our wish, you see
Have fun, be kind, and spread delight,
Happy haunting, and goodnight!

P.S. Our Tip for eating Candy Corn tonight:

- Open the Bag
- Dump it in the garbage can
- Eat a Reese's

APD Accreditation Assessment Completed Ahead of Schedule!

Earlier this week, three assessors and an on-site facilitator from the Massachusetts Police Accreditation Commission, Inc (MPAC) were at the Abington Police Department conducting a thorough review and examination of our agency.

The assessors were tasked with verifying compliance with all applicable standards and program requirements. The assessment began on Tuesday with an introductory meeting between department personnel and the Assessment Team, followed by a facility inspection, an in-depth review of department policies and procedures, and concluded yesterday afternoon with an exit briefing summarizing their findings and recommendations to the Commission.

We’re proud to share that this phase of the process concluded a full day ahead of schedule — a reflection of our team’s preparation, professionalism, and commitment to excellence.

This marks the first step in the department’s journey toward full accreditation, and we remain dedicated to meeting every standard required to achieve that goal.

A sincere thank-you to our officers, staff, and the MPAC Assessment Team, which included:

Facilitator: Chief George McNeill (Ret.), Somerset Police Department

Assessors: Sgt. Mark Carrasquillo, Wellesley Police Department, Sgt. Jose Grajales, Babson College Public Safety Department, and Sgt. Brian Thibault, Mansfield, MA Police Department.

We appreciate their professionalism, expertise, and dedication throughout this important process.💙👮‍♂️

On Monday evening, the Select Board recognized three of our officers and three members of the Rockland Police Department for their efforts in arresting a dangerous driver who was armed with a gun (that turned out to be fake).

Abington Police Sergeant Gillan and Officers Sayers and Gervasi, along with Rockland Sergeant Simpson and Officers Kimball and Aquino, all received citations from the Select Board.

The ceremony continued with the introduction of our seven newest police officers. We want to thank the Select Board for their support, not just for recognizing tremendous police work, but for recognizing our shortages in staffing and budgets.

We will continue to provide stellar police services but we will need the support of our community to keep our staffing where it needs to be.

Seven years have passed since we said goodbye to Sergeant Alex Kokoros, yet his presence is still felt within the Abington Police Department. Alex was known for his unwavering friendship, his kindness toward everyone he met, and his incredible sense of humor that could brighten even the toughest days.

As we remember him today, we not only honor his service and sacrifice, but also the positive impact he left on those around him. His legacy reminds us to look out for one another — to listen, to care, and to find strength together through life’s challenges.

Though time has moved forward, the memory of Sergeant Kokoros remains a lasting part of who we are. He will never be forgotten.
