Local Author Honors Beloved Music Teacher and Mentor in Illustrated Book for All Ages
A deeply personal and heartfelt tribute has emerged from the quiet corners of Laurel, Montana, where a local author Emmie Rich has released Socksy: Opus I, an illustrated book that speaks to readers of all ages. Told through the observant voice of Socksy, a beloved rescue cat, the book paints an intimate portrait of a man whose life has been defined by service, resilience, and an unwavering devotion to music and community.
Robert Engel, a Marine Corps veteran turned music therapist and teacher, has dedicated his life to helping others discover the power of music. Despite enduring profound personal loss, including the passing of his wife and only son, he continues to give selflessly, teaching piano and guitar to students of all ages. Today, he mentors 22 students and leads weekly adult guitar sessions every Wednesday afternoon at the local library, never charging for his time. Through Socksy: Opus I, Rich seeks to preserve Engel’s story, highlighting not only his dedication to music but also his lifelong compassion for animals, having rescued countless cats over the years.
More than a book, this work is a gesture of gratitude. Inspired by Engel’s influence as a teacher to both the author and her children, the story ensures that his life - and the memory of his family - will endure. The author’s chosen pen name, drawn from her own father’s name, further deepens the theme of remembrance. Socksy: Opus I is meant as a lasting thank you – ensuring that Robert Engel’s story, and the lives he has touched, will not be forgotten.
Emmie Rich and Robert Engel will be at the Absarokee Lending Library, Saturday, May 23, 2 p.m. for a book signing and music program. Don't miss this opportunity to meet this extraordinary man and his devoted friend.
