Stillwater County will move to Stage I fire restrictions countywide beginning at 12:01 a.m. tomorrow (Friday, Aug. 7), the Board of County Commissioners announced.

The restrictions, adopted under Resolution 2026-24, prohibit building, maintaining or using open fires and campfires outside of developed or improved recreation sites; smoking outside of enclosed vehicles or buildings, developed recreation sites or a three-foot cleared area; and the discharge or use of fireworks.

The restrictions apply to all public and private land in the county, with the exception of land within Columbus city limits, which is exempt.

Exemptions also apply to devices solely fueled by liquid petroleum or LPG that can be turned on and off and are used in a cleared area, and to law enforcement, emergency services and firefighting personnel acting in an official capacity. Other agency-specific exemptions may apply.

Violators face fines of up to $500 and up to six months imprisonment under state law, and can be held liable for fire suppression costs and damages if they start a fire.

The commissioners approved the resolution based on recommendations from the Stillwater County DES Chief David Stamey and local fire chiefs, citing current fire danger conditions. The restrictions will remain in effect until amended or rescinded by the Board of County Commissioners.

For questions, contact the DES Chief Stamey at 406-290-8871.

Update: The Stone Henge Fire is contained and crews worked all day to extinguish all the cottonwood trees that were involved, which was significant. CFR will keep patrolling the fire throughout the weekend.

Crews from CFR, Absarokee Volunteer Fire Rescue Department , DNRC, Laurel Fire Rescue, and Park City Fire Rescue, Stillwater Co. MT DES, continue to work on the Stone Henge Fire. We also have a dozer on scene. Fire is only around 2 acres but has been difficult due to the amount of Cottonwood trees involved. There has been a lot of saw work. We will have crews on scene through the night and more on scene to continue mop up tomorrow.

If you looking for a great way to start your day, come join us for pancakes tomorrow!!
