Tornado warnings are very serious and indicate a tornado forming in that area may be imminent. This is when we cut into programming and go "wall-to-wall" in our coverage on air and online until the warnings expire.
Our coverage during tornado warnings is meant to keep you safe. And for further guidance, we've compiled some tips on what to do if you do get a tornado warning in your area.
1. Basements (if you have them — yes, we know many of you don't) are the safest place, followed by bathrooms, closets, or any place in your home on the ground floor away from windows and exterior walls.
2. Protect yourself in the event there is damage to your home. You can hide under a sturdy table, a mattress, heavy blankets, or even put on a bike helmet as an additional measure.
3. If you are driving when a tornado warnings hits your area, stop. Get out of the car and seek shelter. Do not try to outrun a tornado. If you are in a mobile home, you should evacuate and get to a safer building as soon as possible.
