The Rubber House is a unique work of architecture that has become a local landmark and an internationally known work of architecture. Its complex forms are entirely sheathed in black EPDM rubber creating a monochromatic, monolithic and mysterious presence. Designed by Tom Pritchard as his first stand-alon

e home, it was built in 1983 for famous choreographer Eugene Loring. Loring was retiring from Hollywood to the Catskills and giving up his Richard Neutra home in the Hollywood Hills. His directive to Pritchard was simple “I’ve lived in a work of art for many years. Now I want to live in another work of art but a very different one.” It’s hard to imagine anything more different from the horizontal white sleekness of Neutra than The Rubber House. Featured in many magazine and news articles when it was new, it reemerged in recent years due to it being owned by actor Willem Dafoe. Dafoe's decision to sell the house spawned a new crop of news and magazine articles and discussion on many blogs devoted to architecture. The House’s new owners share it with artists and creatives from all over the world, allowing people the opportunity to inhabit and appreciate The Rubber House

We are working with the new owners on some updates to the house. We have photographs of the original construction. as well as photos showing how it has changed over the years and will add them slowly as they are scanned. Please ask any questions you have and Tom Pritchard who conceived and created the house will answer them.

After visiting the Rubber House today, I wondered where Bob Lavaggi was, the intrepid builder who helped me realize the construction of the house 40 years ago. A little googling and voila, found him and visited him in Woodstock! Lots of memories and interesting things I’d forgotten. And he has some of the construction photographs I gave him in a scrapbook back then.

NYTimes tomorrow features THE RUBBER HOUSE. My first house, designed to be a group of monolithic sculptural forms. Excised of all ornament and typical vernacular house elements the rubber blurs wall and roof together allowing form remain. Before computer aided design, it was imagined and created by hand, many decisions finalized onsite working with a dedicated team of artist/builders. The rounded form of the studio prefigured Richard Gehry and Richard Serra’s Torqued Ellipses by decades. Designed for choreographer Eugene Loring and later owned by Willem Dafoe. We are working with the new owner on updates and restoration. But for now, you can stay there via AirBNB. NYT link in bio

We were in Kingston today and visiting with Barry at the Enterprise Car rental. Turns out he grew up 1 mile down the road from the Rubber House and his whole family lives there on their farm. Needless to say he knew the ledgendary Rubber House.
