Phil & Paul - The Silver Foxes Performance
Tuesday, August 18th, 1:00-2:00pm
Open to all age 60+/free
Enjoy a fun afternoon with the Silver Foxes who will be performing a selection of popular, easy-listening tunes. Phil & Paul are Phil LoPiccolo (vocals and percussion) and Paul Rodriguez (guitar and vocals), a collaboration that combines more than 50 years of professional musical experience. For the past 10 years, Paul has been front person for the Paul Rodriguez band, while Phil, a 25-year resident of Acton, has been the front person for the Sonic Union band. The duo has performed at numerous restaurants, taverns, senior centers, retirement communities, and nursing homes.

Last Tuesday at the Senior Center, participants learned how to build and customize their own colorful sushi cups, using seasoned sushi rice and a variety of toppings. This fun and easy activity is suitable for entertaining or light summer meals.

The Women in the Age of Revolution Lecture & Theatrical Recitation program explored the meaning of freedom, how it was won, and how it could be used, focusing on women’s writings and conversations during a 70-plus-year period of revolutions in America, France, and Haiti. Scholar Lakshmi Bose traced the history and complexities of these revolutions, while classical actress Poornima Kirby brought women’s pamphlets, letters, songs, and speeches to life through theatrical recitation.

The program highlighted the diverse and often contradictory roles women played during and after the revolutions. Some fought on the front lines or ran businesses, while others demanded new rights or encouraged women to return to the home. The discussion examined questions about women’s freedom after monarchy and whether freedom should depend on education, birth, or race. Through lecture and performance, the event offered a lively, moving, and thought-provoking exploration of women’s experiences and voices during revolutionary times.

Last week at the Senior Center, Firefighter/EMT Brian Smith presented a fire safety talk at 4:00 PM in the dining room, followed by the Fire Department’s annual summer cookout of grilled burgers, summer sides, and an ice cream treat.

Women in the Age of Revolution Lecture & Theatrical Recitation

What is freedom? How do we win it? And if it comes - how will we use it?
Join scholar, Lakshmi Bose, & classical actress, Poornima Kirby, for an inspiring exploration of women’s writings & conversations across the age of revolutions—a 70+ year period spanning movements in America, France & Haiti. Some women fought on the front lines (even loading the cannons!), some ran businesses, & in the aftermath of revolution, some demanded new rights while others encouraged each other to ‘return’ to the home. These conversations were passionate, varied & contradictory. What does freedom look like for women after monarchy? Should it depend on education, birth or race? Many of these women declared otherwise—wanting a taste of the freedom they had helped win—even if they were not sure how it could look! Join us as Lakshmi maps a fascinating path through the shape of these revolutions while Poornima voices the pamphlets, letters, songs & speeches of the women who shaped them. By turns playful, touching and invigorating, this combined lecture and theatrical recitation is a thrilling ride through fiery times! Lakshmi Bose (PhD) is an independent artist and former lecturer in political sociology at the University of Cambridge. She works in theatre, film, and visual arts, & is a writer & illustrator. Poornima Kirby is a classically trained actress, writer & director, specializing in classical & poetic texts, as well as co-created theater. She studied drama at Vassar College & trained in acting and Shakespeare performance at Shakespeare & Co. and London Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts.
