This morning we celebrated Day in front of the Acton Memorial Library. We did some digging through our library archives in search of a historic photo of staff in front of Town Hall--instead, we found a photo from 1890 of members of the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) standing in front of the Acton Memorial Library. (Scroll through to see a century-old photo, followed by a modern-day photo of the whole crew in selfie mode!)

The GAR was a national organization of Union Civil War veterans that provided support to veterans and their families (including food and clothing, medical assistance, and help with fuel expenses) and helped establish Memorial Day as a national tradition. Massachusetts was home to more than 100 GAR posts, where veterans gathered to preserve their shared history and serve their communities.

We tried to recreate the 1890 photo 130 years later for : same Town, same building, but different people serving the community 130 years later. It’s a great reminder of the many generations of people who have gathered in this place and contributed to Acton’s story.

Today we join communities around the globe in observing International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples. Protecting Indigenous knowledge systems, ancestral land, and basic human rights requires intentional community engagement and deep, active listening.

Take time today to engage with local Indigenous-led initiatives, support Indigenous creators, and reflect on how we can foster true equity within our shared spaces.
