A MESSAGE FROM THE CHIEF

June 15, 2021

"At long last, the State of Emergency imposed by the Governor in March of last year is over! It has been a very long, stressful, sad journey. But while numbers regarding vaccine distribution and positive percentage rates will still be kicked around, the worst appears to be over.

“Acushnet, we made it through!

“We began offering Covid testing last fall. From weekly testing of teachers and staff at the school (which ends this week), to large scale testing clinics in the cold to setting up the trailer over at the Council on Aging we end the state of emergency having conducted 10,041 tests.

“Over 10,000 nostrils swabbed!

“Let me be clear, we didn’t test a total of 10,000 people, many people tested weekly for months. But if you would have asked any of us last fall if we would have swabbed that many nostrils, no one would have taken that bet. 10,000 is the population of Acushnet after all.

“Recently, we have tracked a sharp decline in the number of folks who visit the trailer on Fridays and Saturdays. The demand for testing has dropped considerably from the day before Thanksgiving when we performed over 900 rapid tests at the school. It is time for us to scale back a bit but also to offer an alternative.

“Beginning this week, we will no longer conduct testing on Fridays. This coming Saturday, June 19th Acushnet residents are welcome to participate at the Fairhaven testing clinic located at 150 Sconticut Neck Road (the Emergency Management building on the right a little after the 99 Restaurant) beginning at 10am. There is no cost to this testing.

“The following Saturday, June 26th from 9am – noon Acushnet and Fairhaven residents are welcome to be tested at the trailer behind the Council on Aging. That will begin the process of alternating locations moving forward.

"Life is starting to bounce back. Enjoy!"

A MESSAGE FROM THE CHIEF

Friday, June 4, 2021

"The report issued last night by the state had some great news for Acushnet. First, we are in the "Grey" category due to low numbers of new Covid cases in the past 14 days. Who knew "grey" was a thing! Our Percentage Positivity rate is 1.46%.

"A separate report details a community's vaccination rate. I don't want to be a Debbie Downer but....there is some concern.

"Look at the graphs below which detail the number of fully vaccinated Acushnet residents and the increase week over week. Over the past eight weeks we have averaged 343 new fully vaccinated folks over the previous week. Last week alone we had 300 new fully vaccinated residents then the week previous.

"This week we had only 102 new, fully vaccinated, a drop of 66% from May 27th. As of today, only 46% of Acushnet's population is fully vaccinated, an increase of just 1% from last week.

"This vaccination plateau might be a one time occurrence, or, it may be a troubling sign. We are not alone, Fairhaven went from 400 new, fully vaccinated residents last week to 201 this week. It is simply to early to tell but we will continue to monitor and promise to keep you apprised.

"Finally, the best way to turn that number around is to get vaccinated. Coincidentally, Southcoast Hospitals returns to town today for J&J Vaccination Clinic #3 (2pm - 7pm in the parking lot behind the Council on Aging). One dose puts you in the fully vaccinated category! We will try to get them back as many times as it takes to get as many residents vaccinated as possible".

Good news!

Good news! You can now visit the Library without an appointment or any time limits. Chairs are back in place, and the Study Rooms are available by appointment. We haven't put toys back in the Children's Room, yet. We know that many of our patrons have enjoyed our Takeout model, and Takeout is still being offered for a limited time. We do have Temporary Hours for the building, and computer sessions are available by appointment and for up to one hour unless approved in advance. Please put emphasis on the word temporary - and thank you in advance for your patience as we continue to move forward with our plans. Finally, per an advisory issued by the Department of Public Health on May 29th, all unvaccinated residents are advised to wear masks in indoor settings and when they can't socially distance. Thank you!

"Reminder; Friday, June 4th from 2pm-7pm the Southcoast Health Wellness Van will be at the rear parking lot of the Council on Aging (59 1/2 South Main Street) providing the J&J Covid Vaccine! This clinic is open to everyone 18 and older (no residence requirement).

"We are unsure when the next opportunity to receive the vaccine, this locally, will be.
If you are planning on getting vaccinated, please take advantage of this opportunity.

"Currently, 4,735 Acushnet residents are fully vaccinated. That is only 45% of our population. On March 30th only 19% was fully vaccinated so while we are in a better place there is still work to do.

"The J&J Vaccine is a "one and done" shot. Become fully vaccinated tomorrow, sometime during the five hours the Van will be in town. We specifically asked for this window of time to accommodate residents working during the day.

"We hope to see you Friday, June 4th, and then see you maskless around town."

We have received many calls from parents interested in getting their children, ages 12 and up, vaccinated. There are many clinics with many schedules at many locations. Flying under the radar is the availability of vaccine at the Fairhaven Walmart pharmacy. We contacted staff there and they explained to us the ease in which you can schedule an appointment and receive a shot. The link is provided below and you will need to set up an account so that registration forms can be completed. We hope this additional vaccine opportunity helps!

This is open to all ages but might be a serious contender for parents looking to get their children vaccinated.

Are we spraying at all?
