Happy July 4th Weekend! We're looking forward to seeing everyone enjoy the holiday with us. Please remember that our beach is still closed for major renovations; however, our boat ramp and docks are open. And your four-legged friends will appreciate this: fireworks and sparklers aren't allowed in Georgia's State Parks. We suggest coming early for easier parking. Check out our trails and upcoming events on https://gastateparks.org/redtopmountain.

Scratch blocks can start being reserved on Eventbrite tomorrow (Mar. 13th)! Please read the rules on Eventbrite carefully before reserving a block. Once we reach capacity, scratch blocks will stop being sold.

We have a couple of changes to the rules:

*We will not be selling blocks at the Visitor Center. Every block must be reserved.

Scratch Blocks

With the first Iron Pour of the year coming up on Feb. 13th, we get asked a lot of questions about what scratch blocks are.

Scratch blocks are resin bonded sand pressed into a mold. After they cure, the blocks are released from the mold. Guests buy these blocks to scratch into. Our rangers and volunteers then pour molten iron into the block, and the guests can take home the iron piece.

The blocks are made here at Red Top Mountain at our casting shed. We have two sizes. Small blocks are 5” x 5” and our large blocks are 5” x 15”.

Here is a short video of the process.

Christmas has come to Red Top Mountain State Park! Our historic Vaughan Log Cabin is decorated with festive attire and a roaring fire. Families visiting the park are welcome to come take their family holiday photos with this beautiful backdrop. As Santa cannot be with us this year, we have a letter writing station where visitors can write letters to Santa. The cabin will be open for visitors Friday, December 4, 2020 from 10 am to 4 pm.

10/30/2020

Today, Friday October 30, 2020, Red Top still has no power in the cottages, campground, trading post or visitor center. The visitor center and trading post are both staffed and the doors are open to the public but until further notice we are not able to make calls or access the reservation system.

"Take only memories, leave only footprints." -Chief Seattle

Red Top Mountain State Park practices Leave No Trace (LNT). LNT means that you must leave what you find where you find it. This allows for other guest to have the same opportunity to observe what can be found here at Red Top. This also lets plants and animals have a safe place to thrive that is not as impacted by the involvement of humans.

Mushrooms are illegal to pick from any Georgia State Park. They grow here, live here, and decay here. They are an important part of the delicate ecosystems State Parks try to maintain; mushrooms provide nutrients to our wildlife, help in the decomposition process, and provide an opportunity for park guests to admire their beauty from afar.

Here is a picture of one of our Rangers with a bag of mushrooms that a visitor was trying to take from the park. Not only is it not LNT, it is illegal and can be dangerous. The amount of mushroom poisonings have significantly increased in recent years; misidentification and misinformation have been the leading causes of poisonings.

Common misidentified mushrooms are Jack o’ Lantern (orange), Destroying Angel (white), and Death Cap (brown and cream); to name a few toxic/deadly mushrooms misidentified as edible.

These girls picked up 3 bags of trash off White Tail and Lake Loop! We noticed that there aren't any trash cans near picnic tables. Maybe it would help with trash if there were more trash cans?

Hey all, Will there be anything planned for HALLOWEEN this year? I've tried looking through the events advertised ands nothing specifically for this holiday, aside from the hayrides being suspended. Please advise.
Where is the "Notes" page which Charles Seabrook mentioned in his AJC article?
I am have seen a lot of events added to the calendar. I also noticed that Haunted Hayride is not listed. Will it be returning? And if not, I am very curious as to why, since with its popularity it seems it made quite a bit of money and has been a tradition for a very long time? That is an event that many, many families look forward to every year. I hope that you guys will choose to bring it back and haven’t discontinued it for forever.
