🔥 PONTOTOC COUNTY BURN BAN — EFFECTIVE IMMEDIATELY 🔥

The Pontotoc County Board of County Commissioners has instituted a countywide burn ban effective today, August 24, 2026, for a period of 14 days.

Due to current dry conditions and the increased risk of fire, outdoor burning is prohibited throughout Pontotoc County for the duration of the ban.

We ask everyone to take this restriction seriously. Even a small fire can spread rapidly under dry conditions, placing homes, property, livestock, and first responders at risk.

Please use extra caution with any activity that could produce sparks or ignite dry vegetation.

Burn Ban Effective: August 24, 2026
Duration: 14 days

Earlier today, an animal-related call in the Roff area prompted staff at Roff Public Schools to bring students back inside from recess out of an abundance of caution.

A resident reported several aggressive dogs attacking animals on private property. Before deputies arrived, the resident discharged a fi***rm and one of the dogs was shot while attempting to stop the attack.

Because the incident occurred nearby, school staff at Roff Public Schools briefly moved students indoors while deputies responded and assessed the situation. At no time were the school or students in immediate danger.

We appreciate the quick action by school staff and the cooperation of the community while deputies handled the call.

PRESS RELEASE 02/10/2026 — ROFF PUBLIC SCHOOLS INCIDENT UPDATE

This morning, school administrators at Roff Public Schools were alerted by a teacher that a student may have brought a weapon onto campus.

Administrators immediately notified the on‑site deputy serving as the School Resource Officer, who quickly responded to take possession of the item and determine its nature.

Upon inspection, the item was found to be a toy gun, not a real weapon. At no time was there any active threat to students or staff.

School officials handled the matter internally in accordance with district policy.

We appreciate the swift action of the teacher who reported the concern, the administrators who followed proper procedures, and the School Resource Officer for ensuring the safety of everyone on campus.

The safety of our students remains our highest priority.
