Frost quakes (or cryoseisms) are possible and occur when, during rapid, extreme cold snaps often below 25 degrees Fahrenheit. Saturated soil or groundwater freezes, expands, and breaks, producing loud booms and ground shaking. They often occur at night or early morning, particularly when snow cover is thin, and pose no significant danger.
