Men's Health Week

This weekend marks the conclusion of International Men's Health Week, a global initiative aimed at raising awareness about the unique health challenges men and boys face. It's a time to promote open conversations, regular check-ups, and stronger support systems—because men's health impacts the whole family.

This week coincides with Men's Health Month 2025, which focuses on Closing the Empathy Gap in Men's Health—ensuring that men and boys receive the care, understanding, and access to services they deserve.

At the Addison Township Mental Health Board, we recognize that emotional and mental health are just as critical as physical well-being. That's why we partner with a network of organizations—such as Serenity House—to offer confidential, local mental health support explicitly tailored for Addison Township residents.

🗣 Start the conversation with someone you care about:

Know your family health history and personal risk.

Lean on support systems.

Stay engaged with regular check-ups.

Let's help build lifelong habits of care.

🧠💜 June is Alzheimer’s & Brain Awareness Month 💜🧠

The Addison Township Mental Health Board joins the global movement this June to raise awareness about Alzheimer's disease, other dementias, and overall brain health. This is a time to educate, advocate, and show support for the millions impacted by these devastating conditions.

Alzheimer's is a fatal disease that currently has no cure, no way to prevent it, and no way to slow its progression. But together, we can shine a light on the urgent need for research, care resources, and mental health support.

💜 That's why we're proud to "go purple" and support those living with Alzheimer's and their caregivers. Mental health plays a crucial role in navigating the emotional challenges of memory loss — and we're here to support you every step of the way.

Let's turn awareness into action — for our families, our neighbors, and our future. 💜

🌟 National Cancer Survivors Day – Celebrating Strength and Hope 🌟

Join the Addison Township Mental Health Board in recognizing National Cancer Survivors Day (NCSD) — a powerful annual celebration of life, resilience, and community. 💛

This year marks the 38th anniversary of NCSD, observed on the first Sunday in June. It's a day when cancer survivors, families, friends, and supporters gather to honor those who have faced cancer head-on and to show the world that life after a cancer diagnosis can be meaningful and productive.

At the Addison Township Mental Health Board, we recognize that survivorship encompasses not only physical health but also emotional and mental well-being. We stand with all survivors and offer continued support for the mental health challenges that may follow a cancer diagnosis. You're not alone — we're here to help.

Let's unite in support, hope, and healing.

Together, we celebrate life. Together, we thrive. 🌿

🫡💚 June is PTSD Awareness Month 💚🫡

This month, the Addison Township Mental Health Board honors all those affected by Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) — particularly our veterans — by raising awareness, sharing resources, and reducing stigma.

PTSD is a mental health condition that can develop after experiencing or witnessing a traumatic event. It can affect anyone — men, women, children, and especially military personnel and veterans returning from combat. While an estimated 7–8% of the U.S. population will experience PTSD in their lifetime, many don’t seek help due to stigma or lack of support.

We want to change that.

In 2010, Senator Kent Conrad led efforts to establish a national day of awareness in memory of Staff Sergeant Joe Biel, who died by su***de after two tours in Iraq. His birthday, June 27, is now recognized as PTSD Awareness Day. And since 2014, the entire month of June has been nationally designated as PTSD Awareness Month — a time to educate, support, and connect.

💬 If you or someone you know is struggling, help is available. The Addison Township Mental Health Board offers local resources and mental health support for veterans and community members facing PTSD and other trauma-related challenges.

📞 Don’t wait. There is no shame in seeking help.

📲 Use the hashtag to show your support.

Together, we can honor invisible wounds, support healing, and build a stronger, more compassionate community. 💚

June is “National Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Awareness Month”, and is intended to raise public awareness about issues related to PTSD.

🌸 Today is International Day of Women’s Health! 🌸

On this important day—May 28—we stand in solidarity with women and girls worldwide to raise awareness about the unique health challenges they face. This day is more than a celebration—it's a call to action.

At the Addison Township Mental Health Board, we recognize that mental health is an essential part of overall health, and we are committed to promoting access to quality, inclusive care for all women in our community.

This day serves as a platform to spotlight critical issues such as:

Bodily autonomy

Access to quality and equitable healthcare

The ongoing fight against discrimination and violence

Women’s health cannot be separated from their rights, dignity, and mental well-being. That’s why we continue to advocate for services that support and uphold Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) for all.

Let’s work together to create a world where every woman has the support, freedom, and care she deserves—physically, emotionally, and mentally. 💜

🌟 Today, May 8th, marks National Children's Mental Health Awareness Day — and at the Addison Township Mental Health Board, we’re committed to shining a light on the importance of supporting children’s mental well-being. 🌱🧠

Mental health is essential to a child's development, learning, and overall quality of life. Yet, 1 in 6 children between the ages of 2 and 8 experience a mental or behavioral disorder — and too many go without the help they need.

💚 Let’s continue to break the stigma, raise awareness, and ensure every child has access to the care and support they deserve.

📚 Families, caregivers, and educators can find helpful resources from organizations like SAMHSA and the American Psychological Association (APA).

Together, we can build a stronger, more compassionate community for our youngest residents.

🧠 Tardive Dyskinesia Awareness Week | May 4–10

Tardive dyskinesia (TD) is a neurological syndrome that causes involuntary (out of your control) muscle movements, often affecting the face, lips, tongue, or limbs. It is most commonly caused by long-term use of antipsychotic (neuroleptic) medications, but other medications can also lead to TD.

The term “tardive” means delayed, and “dyskinesia” refers to involuntary movement — reflecting how this condition often appears after months or even years of medication use. While it can develop after long-term treatment, older adults (over 65) may develop TD even after short-term use.

More than 500,000 Americans live with TD, yet awareness and understanding are still limited.

This 8th Annual TD Awareness Week, the Addison Township Mental Health Board stands with the Movement Disorders Policy Coalition, patient advocates, and healthcare providers to:

✅ Increase awareness
✅ Reduce stigma
✅ Support individuals and families affected by TD

Together, we can help ensure that those living with tardive dyskinesia are seen, heard, and supported.

🌸 May is Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month 🌺

Each May, we honor the history, culture, and countless contributions of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders in the U.S. This month is also a time to reflect on the unique challenges the AAPI community faces—including in the realm of mental health.

From the arrival of Japanese immigrants in 1843 to the vital role Asian workers played in building the transcontinental railroad, the AAPI community has helped shape our nation. Today, more than 24 million Americans identify as Asian, representing a rich diversity of cultures and experiences.

At the Addison Township Mental Health Board, we recognize that cultural stigma, language barriers, and lack of access to culturally competent care can often prevent individuals in AAPI communities from seeking mental health support. That’s why our mission includes supporting organizations that offer inclusive and culturally sensitive mental health services.

This month—and every month—we reaffirm our commitment to mental wellness for all, and to building a community where every voice is heard and supported.
