With deepest regret and great sorrow the Addison Volunteer Fire Department announces the passing of 59-year member and past-Chief, Bernard Dubois at the age of 77.

Bernard Dubois joined the Addison Volunteer Fire Department in 1966. In his almost 60 years of service with the AVFD, he held the position of Assistant Chief for seven years, and Chief for twenty years. He served on many committees of the Addison Fire Department including the Truck committee to spec the first brand new truck the department purchased. He also served on several committees for the Addison County Firefighters Association, and the Vermont State Firefighters Association.
As a member of the Vermont Fire Chiefs Association, he was a delegate to the Vermont Fire & Rescue Coalition.
He was a past Vice-President and President of the ACFA, and served as the Addison County Rep to the VSFA for 17 years. He served on the VSFA Heart Fund Committee that now provides a death benefit to the family of any VSFA member. He was a VSFA life member.
Bernard was always a strong supporter of firefighter training and served as evaluator and safety officer for the Addison County Regional Fire School for several years.

Vermont Issues Statewide Ban on Debris Burning; No Burning Permits Shall Be Issued

Montpelier, VT - After a warm, dry week and weekend and several reports of large wildfires in Vermont, the Vermont Department of Forests, Parks, and Recreation (FPR) has issued an order for all of the state's forest fire wardens to cease issuing burning permits from 3:00 pm on October 28, 2024 through 3:00 pm
on November 11, 2024. The order will be in effect for two weeks and can be revoked earlier if conditions warrant. Over the last week, the wildfire danger has fluctuated between high, very high, and extreme throughout
the state. With the continued dry weather outlook and the abundance of dry leaves and dry fuels in Vermont’s forests, wildfires have the potential to spread rapidly. Recent relative humidity levels as low as 16% in the past week and winds gusting over 30 MPH have also influenced wildfire spread. Furthermore,
there is no significant rainfall in the forecast and therefore fire danger is expected to remain at these elevated levels for the foreseeable future.
"We have received notification from many Town Forest Fire Wardens that they have stopped issuing burn permits in their towns," said Danielle Fitzko, Commissioner of the Department of Forests, Parks and
Recreation. “This statewide order supports their efforts. We are also concerned with fire department personnel becoming strained and fatigued as they share responsibility for wildland fire response.” The current fire situation is not limited to Vermont. “Other New England states currently have elevated fire danger and are experiencing large wildfires that have required assistance from neighboring states,”
said Dan Dillner, Vermont Forest Fire Supervisor. “It is critical that we reduce the potential for further human caused fires by putting this temporary ban on burn permits in place.”
Fires over the weekend have destroyed two camps in Barnard, VT. Some of these fires were caused by improper disposal of wood stove ash and debris burning.

Please, hold off on burning anything outside until we get a decent amount of rain.

Vermont Wildland Fire Danger forecast for today (October 23) is VERY HIGH.
Fires in these areas start easily from all causes and often spread faster than suppression resources can be delivered. Outdoor burning is not recommended in Very High areas.

It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that the City of Vergennes Fire Department announce the passing of Chief Jim Breur, who passed away Friday March 24th with his loving family at his side after a hard fought battle with cancer. Chief Breur joined the department in 1978 and worked his way up to Chief of the department in 2009, a positon he holds to date.

Chief Breur was named Addison County Firefighters' Association (ACFA) chief of the year in 2021. Chief Breur has served the ACFA Advisory Board for 28 years and held positon of President from 2005 to 2006. Additionally, the Chief served for many years on the Vermont State Firefighters Association (VSFA) executive board.

The Chief dedicated his life to the department and to all communities we serve. Jim's wisdom and dedication will live on in this department for many generations to come.

He will be missed deeply and we can not thank his family and most of all his loving wife Sandi enough for sharing Jim with us.

Loyal to Duty is our motto and Jim was the very definition.

Services will be announced at a later time.
