🌽🌎From South Sudan to Iowa 🌍🌽

John Leke’s journey from a refugee camp in Ethiopia to returning to farming in Sudan, is a powerful story of resilience and passion for agriculture. During a recent visit to Brenda and Peter Wicks’ farm near Adel, John experienced Iowa farming firsthand. From GPS-guided equipment to crop rotation, he was amazed by the technology and eager to learn. Inspired by what he saw, John hopes to bring small-scale mechanization back to his family farm in South Sudan and support other farmers in the future.
A true reminder that farming connects us all—no matter where we call home. 🌱

Read about John's visit in next week's Dallas County's Spokesman.

🎉Scholarship Spotlight: Kinsey Hick🎉

Dallas County Farm Bureau is proud to announce seven students were awarded a scholarship to further their agricultural careers and education and will highlight each of the recipients. This week, we are proud to highlight Kinsey Hick, daughter of Sean and Sarah Hick. Kinsey currently is a senior at Adel-DeSoto-Minburn High School and plans to attend Iowa State University this fall with a major in Agriculture Studies. Kinsey is highly involved in the ADM FFA Chapter and Sugar Grove Blue Ribbon Winners 4-H Club, where she is active in multiple activities and contests such as livestock judging, chapter test, many swine and goat projects, as well as ISJS shows, JIMGA, and showing at the Iowa State Fair. Kinsey has held many leadership roles and actively completes volunteer efforts, such as holding multiple officer positions in 4-H, mentoring the Pig’s to Pals program, and much more. When asking Kinsey why agriculture is important to her and her family, she notes “Agriculture is important to my family because my parents own and operate Hick Electric and a lot of their customers are rural farmers or people with ag businesses. His day-to-day work is to repair grain bin motors, electrical needs within the farmers operation, and wiring buildings to house farm equipment or livestock. Agriculture is important to me because I have grown up on an acreage in Dallas County and have been a part of agriculture my whole life. Purchasing, feeding, raising, and showing livestock has given me the drive to continue a future in agriculture.” Congratulations, Kinsey!

⏰Time is running out to apply!⏰

Does your family potentially have a Century Farm (100+years old) or Heritage Farm (150+years old)? 🧐

Every year, IDALS and Iowa Farm Bureau recognize Iowa's long tradition of family farming by recognizing some of our farm operations. Farms that have been held in the same family for over 100 years are celebrated as Century Farms, and farms that have been in the family for over 150 years are celebrated as Heritage Farms. Each farm is awarded a certificate by the Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship (IDALS) and a marker to post on the farm by Iowa Farm Bureau Federation. These awards are given out at the Iowa State Fair in August.

You can download the applications for Century a
and Heritage Farm awards from the IDALS website, at this link: https://iowaagriculture.gov/century-and-heritage-farm-program
Applications must be notarized and postmarked by June 1 of the application year.

For Century and Heritage Farm program questions, contact Kelly Reece at 515-281-3645 or [email protected].
