Moms & dads: Measles is in Iowa and that can be scary to think about if you have littles at home. Talk with your child's pediatrician about the MMR vaccine. Vaccination is an amazing tool that helps us to greatly reduce the risk of a measles infection if we are exposed.

First doses of the MMR vaccine are given at 12 months, but an extra dose is possible starting at 6 months if you want protection to start a little earlier.

Iowa HHS officials have confirmed 12 cases of measles in Southern Iowa. Vaccination is our best tool against measles. People who are not vaccinated against measles should talk to their healthcare provider about MMR vaccination.

Anyone present at the locations listed should monitor themselves for symptoms. Symptoms of measles include fever, cough, red/watery eyes, runny nose, and a rash. If you think you have been exposed to measles and have symptoms, call your medical provider or nearest emergency room ahead of time and tell them before arrival that you have been exposed to measles and have symptoms.
