This Memorial Day, we remember and honor the heroes who gave everything for our freedom.
Peacebuilding and Conflict Prevention is one of Rotary's seven areas of focus. Rotarians train leaders to mediate conflict, support peace-building in devastated regions, and assist refugees.
No one wants peace more than the men and women that serve in the United States Armed Forces.

It was a fine day for the 2026 ADM Graduation Ceremony! Fellow Rotarian and Superintendent of Schools Greg Dufoe kicked off the afternoon with a welcome and the introduction of the first senior speaker. Adel Rotary supports programs at ADM Schools that foster literacy, leadership, and community involvement.
Adel Rotarians had sons or a grandson graduate today. Congratulations to Trey, Reed and Christian!

It wasn't easy catching up with this busy ADM HS junior but we didn't want to miss honoring Shadd Livingston before this school year concluded! Shadd was named the ADM Scholarship Foundation Student of the Month for March for Boys Golf, sponsored by the Adel Rotary Club. The ADM Golf Team missed a trip to State by one stroke but have high hopes to advance next year due to a strong showing by several younger classmates.

Wednesday afternoon found Adel Rotary Club President Rylan Vos hosting the ADM 67th Honor Awards Ceremony, after the Club provided a lunch of pizza for graduating seniors. What a talented class of students was evident as many students received scholarships and awards!
Congratulations, Seniors!

Thanks to Jackson Harper-Griffith, Community Outreach Coordinator for the Iowa Donor Network, we now know that last year there were 124 donations of organs or tissue to people waiting for life-saving procedures. There are many kinds of donations but donation is very rare because only 3 people out of about 1,000 people die in a condition to be able to donate.
Advances in technology and processes have improved the durability of donations but there are still 600 Iowans waiting for kidneys alone.
Donors are celebrated every year for their thoughtfulness. Rotarians are grateful for all of the life-saving and life-altering medical procedures that mean so much to the recipients.

We had great weather for our 7th Annual Safety Bike Rodeo on Saturday! Many thanks to all who attended, to the City of Adel, to the Adel Police Department Officers who shared safe bike-riding tips with kids and parents, to Bif at Bike World who inspected bikes so kids could ride safely, and to all our sponsors who provided great prizes!

Tom Bice founded the Garden of Grace at Grace Lutheran Church 11 years ago to provide fresh produce for the Good Samaritan Food Pantry in Adel. An avid gardener, Tom wanted to extend the mission of the church to "where the hungry are fed." Starting with donations, four plots were formed and fenced. Harvey's Greenhouse has donated pots of vegetables every year and now United Way has provided some grant funds for seeds and other supplies and equipment for the last 5 years. In the last 10 years, Garden of Grace has supplied over 10 tons of fresh produce to the Pantry!
Adel Rotary has applied for a Rotary District 6000 Community Grant to supply planting equipment to help ease the work of volunteers during that busy time. Rotarians also volunteer at the Garden, as others in the community are welcome to do.
Reach out to Tom to be added to the email list for future work days.

Our second honoree to receive the Adel Rotary Club's ADM Student of the Month for May was Nick Subbert. His selection reads: "I think Nick is a positive role model to underclassmen in sports, fine arts, academics, and socially. I've notice that Nick has befriended a significant number of younger classmates to help them find a social circle at our school. He invited several of them to his senior presentation and set a great example of the purpose and product of a professional senior presentation. I think Nick has made it a mission to help others in our school feel welcome and find a group that will accept them no matter what."
The Adel Rotary Club ADM Student Recognition Program honors students who demonstrate consistent kindness, a helpful spirit, and a commitment to making a positive difference both at school and within the greater community, exemplifying Rotary's ideal of "Service Above Self."
Nick is pictured receiving a certificate of achievement and a $25 gift card from President-Elect Ellie Mendlik.

Two ADM Senior Students were selected to receive the Adel Rotary Club's ADM Senior Student of the Month for May. Our first honoree was Miller Banse. His selection reads: "Miller has really excelled in his senior year. He was nominated as the section leader for the marching band. He leads this group with compassion because Miller realizes what it's like to struggle as a freshman and/or sophomore. Miller used his talents to make sure his section learned their music and were confident in marching. Besides playing in the symphonic band, Miller decided he wanted to help the younger students by joining the 9-10 concert band. He has made a huge positive impact by mentoring his peers. I am very happy to see Miller's growth and to see him lending a helping hand to younger high school students."
