The ADM football season got underway with a home game against Winterset Friday night. The American Legion Penoach Post 464 Color Guard was on hand to raise the colors before the playing of the National Anthem. Today, we observe August 14 as National Navajo Code Talkers Day, a special day to honor the bravery and sacrifice of the Navajo men who developed an unbreakable code based on their native language during WWII.
The U.S. Marines enlisted 29 Navajo men who participated in every major Marine operation in the Pacific theater. Code talkers worked in pairs-one on the frontlines and one behind the lines-communicating by radio and telephone. To prevent the enemy from breaking the code and gaining access to important information, there were no printed code manuals. Code talkers had to memorize all the words and translations they used.
Their extraordinary feats are part of the military history of our country! We thank them for their service!

National Purple Heart Day falls on August 7 every year, honoring the men and women wounded or killed while serving in the U.S. Armed Forces. The Nation's oldest military decoration, Gen. George Washington personally ordered creation of the Badge of Military Merit on August 7, 1782, to recognize bravery in combat. The badge fell out of use before being revived and renamed the Purple Heart in 1932, its scope expanded to cover service members wounded or killed in battle.
Eligibility has since grown to include injuries from terrorist attacks and designated peacekeeping service as well. More than 1.8 million Purple Hears have been awarded across American conflicts, with especially large numbers for service in WWII, Vietnam, Iraq and Afghanistan.
Members of the Army, Navy, Air Force, Space Force, Marine Corps and Coast Guard are all eligible.
Today, we thank all of the Purple Heart recipients for their service and for their sacrifice.

Paul Giles is the recipient of the first Bill and Coleen Sandquist Veterans Scholarship, awarded August 3, 2026, honoring Bill's service in the U.S. Air Force and both Bill's and Coleen's service to veterans and to the Adel Community.
Valuing education, this scholarship is a way to give back to a student at ADM Schools, where their family benefited from the educations received. Applicants must be children, stepchildren, or grandchildren of veterans that have served in the Armed Forces; completing their senior year of high school; and planning to attend post-secondary education programs.
As longtime members of the Adel American Legion Post and Auxiliary, Bill and Coleen and their family are patriots at heart. The applicant chosen to receive this scholarship is part of a military family in which both parents, Mike and Jackie Giles, are veterans. Paul will be attending UNI in the Fall, majoring in Political Science.

Adel American Legion Penoach Post 464 $500 Scholarships were presented to Lauryn Troster and Paul Giles by Commander Jerry Bond at the Legion Post meeting on August 3. To qualify for this scholarship, the applicant must be a child or grandchild of a veteran that has served in the Armed Forces, be a graduating senior, and have plans to attend an accredited institution of higher education.
Lauryn qaulified through her grandfather, an Army veteran; she plans to attend Iowa State University in the Fall, majoring in Business. Paul qualified through his father and mother, both Army veterans; he plans to attend the University of Northern Iowa, majoring in Political Science.
Congratulations to Lauryn and Paul!

On August 4, 1790, President George Washington signed the Tariff Act, authorizing ten cutters proposed by Treasury Secretary Alexander Hamilton--the Revenue Cutter Service that became today's Coast Guard.
Celebrating its 236th Birthday today, the U.S. Coast Guard is commemorating over two centuries of maritime rescue, law enforcement, and national defense under a single command. The Coast Guard lives its motto, Semper Paratus ("Always Ready"), every day.

National Korean War Veterans Armistice Day commemorates the end of the Korean War on July 27, 1953, and recognizes those who served during this often forgotten war. On June 25, 1950, the first war of the Cold War-era erupted when North Korean forces crossed the border into South Korea. The war would last three years, involving troops from around the globe and costing millions of lives.
Today, we remember and honor those who served.

The DM VA Hospital has issued its July Needs List for veterans for items that can't be purchased with federal funds. The Adel American Legion Auxiliary Unit 464 is one of its contributors that collects donations from our community and expends funds from Poppy distributions in response. Items may be dropped off at 1305 S. 15th Street, Adel, or call Shirley McAdon at (515) 993-4862 for pick up.
If you wish to make a monetary donation, you may make a directed contribution to one of the VA Hospital funds as listed in the flyer or, locally, to the Adel American Legion Auxiliary Unit 464 at the address above.
