Crime Stoppers of Lenawee ends online tip program — July 31, 2025

Effective July 31, 2025, the Crime Stoppers of Lenawee County online tip program has been retired, its board of directors voted today. Tips can be submitted instead to the Central Dispatch Center or to the appropriate law enforcement agencies individually.

The all-volunteer Crime Stoppers of Lenawee program has served Lenawee County for 22 years, offering rewards for anonymous tips to help solve cases referred to it by local agencies. Recent years, however, saw a sharp drop off in cases referred to it. Cases fell from 10 four years ago to an average of fewer than five cases per year since then. This mirrors a national trend for other Crime Stoppers chapters as many police departments began their own social media pages and started posting their cases on their pages.

Combined with increased annual fees for tip software that would be due Aug. 1, the board of Crime Stoppers of Lenawee County voted not to renew the software. The volunteers will continue to wind down operations over the next few months. Until then, the public can email [email protected] for reward claims or other matters. The two phone lines Crime Stoppers has used at Lenawee County Central Dispatch at 517-266-6161 or 877-276-8477 are in use for now. Other law enforcement agencies can be contacted individually.

“The board and I want to thank everyone who’s worked together to help solve numerous cases over the past two decades,” stated Bill Wise, who served as president of Crime Stoppers of Lenawee County since its founding. “The partnership made a real difference.”

WHEREAS, in 1962 President Kennedy proclaimed May 15th of each year to be “National Peace Officers Memorial Day” and designated the week this date falls within as “National Police Week”, and

WHEREAS, members of law enforcement deserve the appreciation and respect of the people of Lenawee County for the merit, dignity, bravery, and reliability they exhibit every day. We are indeed fortunate and grateful for the contributions of law enforcement officers to the people of this state;

WHEREAS, we pray for the safety and protection of all 800,000 plus sworn Law Enforcement Officers being vigilant throughout our county and great nation despite nearly half a million violent crimes committed each year

WHEREAS, we publicly salute the service of law enforcement officers in our county, as well as, those of our state and nation, and honor police who place their lives on the line for the safety and security of their communities.

MI State Troopers Calvin Jones, Dugald Pellot, Rodger Adams, and Byron Erickson

We will never forget the officers who gave the ultimate sacrifice and their families.

WHEREAS, Lenawee County’s fallen officers will never be forgotten, nor will their service to our communities. By choosing to commit themselves to law enforcement, these brave individuals answered the call for service and willingly put their lives in jeopardy. We commend them for choosing a noble career and protecting public safety.

Reminder: Scammers can manipulate the information displayed on your caller ID to make it appear the call is from a legitimate agency.

The Lenawee County Sheriff's Office has received multiple calls stating that "Deputy Christopher Avery" called them regarding a warrant for their arrest. In one case the "Deputy" emailed the woman several attachments with the person's name including an "Order to Arrest" from the "United States District Court of Michigan".

If you receive a call like this simply HANG UP, this is a scam! The Sheriff's Office does not make phone calls even remotely like these, nor do we have a Deputy by this name. We are not sure of the callers motive, in the case above the spammer encouraged the woman to go to our Sheriff's Office. Again, just hang up. And NEVER open an attachment from anyone you are not familiar with, especially if you are not expecting an email.
