Afton Recreation Board

The Afton REC Board conducted a meeting on Sunday, May 17th to discuss the upcoming youth sports season, in response to Covid-19. Our youth programs are able to be provided based on our strong volunteer base. Our volunteers assist in coaching, umpiring, field work, and concessions. These volunteers are made up of community members, parents, board members, and school aged children. After careful consideration, it is with a heavy heart we decided to cancel the 2020 summer REC ball season. This includes; t-ball, coach pitch, and minor/major softball/baseball. Part of the REC's mission is to ensure we provide these opportunities to the community in a safe and responsible manner. At this time, we are unable to fulfill this commitment.

Please know that if the conditions improve and restrictions are relaxed, we the REC Board will provide equal opportunity to all youth. While the season will remain cancelled we will try to provide voluntary youth summer practices to work on fundamentals and enjoy what we can of the summer season.

With the cancellation of summer youth sports, City Hall is currently working on issuing refunds via checks. The refund amount you will receive is based on the payment you made for registration, concession fee, and extra t-shirt orders. If the address listed on the registration provided is not accurate, please contact City Hall to have this corrected. The refunds should be ready within a week.

We hope that you and your family are staying safe and healthy. Thank you for your understanding.

Iowa Select Farms

Since the very beginning of our community giving efforts, we've witnessed first-hand how the littlest of gestures can provide big support to a family or child in need.

This is why the Iowa Select Farms employees living in and working near Afton, Iowa today unveiled the Deb and Jeff Hansen Foundation’s Little Free Pantry.

Located next up on the square near city park, the pantry provides 24/7 access for families and children facing short-term, emergency situations.

These pantries are designed to supplement existing hunger relief efforts by offering emergency resources like snacks, food, diapers and children's care products.

Employees Julie Crouch, Jessica Rosener and T’Lee Girard will care for and stock the pantry, and many local leaders have also stepped forward to help keep watch on this special structure.

The Afton Little Free Pantry was built by Philip Jass—a talented furniture maker and wood craftsman from Alden, Iowa. He's also the husband of Cassandra Jass, DVM and Director of Production Well-Being for Iowa Select Farms.

The pantry was painted by Ray “Bubba” Sorensen, The Freedom Rock artist. Bubba was commissioned by the Deb and Jeff Hansen Foundation to handpaint the three sides with child-inspired images of farm animals, rural landscapes and community landmarks—all unique to Afton and Union County, and all in celebration of the connection between farming and strong communities.

This is the second Little Free Pantry introduced by the Deb and Jeff Hansen Foundation. Eight more are planned for the upcoming months.

P.S. Special thanks to employees Wes Mathany, Chris Franklin and James Hagen for the install—we love all of our employees for their amazing dedication and commitment to their communities, the Deb and Jeff Hansen Foundation and Iowa Select Farms. Philip Jass

With all the cleaning related to COVID-19, please do NOT flush wipes of any kind (flushable or non-flushable), paper towels, napkins, diapers, feminine hygiene products, socks, dryer sheets or facial tissue down your toilet. FORWARDED FROM ANOTHER GROUP I'M IN.... Question: since the kids can’t have a community egg hunt this year, what about putting on one ourselves? We can put an egg in our window to sow we are participating. Then in an Easter basket outside your house you can leave a treat in a plastic egg for the kids to get out of your basket or if you don’t want to leave them in an egg just leave in a basket!!! It’s to be in the 60’s Monday,Tuesday and Wednesday this week. Take your kids for a walk and find eggs!! Everyone that does this can leave your address so parents know where to go! Just a suggestion! 🐰

Anybody have a teenage daughter about 13 or 14 years old that was up at the park this afternoon? She had just left about 5 minutes ago. Her and her friends were being destructive. As you can see she was swing on the light poles and I caught one of her friends being rough with the parent/baby swing. But didn't get a picture of him doing it. I just want to show the parent of this teenage girl what she was doing unsupervised. If you would like to ask any questions pm me! Thanks!

I went to JH in Afton back in 1977. Was wondering if anyone remembered watching a video about a stoning over what I believe was property. Was 7th grade. I don't remember what class it was or the reasoning for watching it. Has always disturbed me but now with the help of FB maybe someone out there can help me solve this mystery. Thank you, Diane
