FROM AFTON POLICE DEPT: The Afton Police Department is announcing a retirement reception for retiring Police Chief John Coulter on June 21st. 2018 at the park in Afton from 6 to 8. The Afton Lion's club will be offering pulled pork sandwiches and condiments for a free will donation. Please come and join the Afton City Council in wishing John a great retirement after 7 years in the Navy, 7 years as a Medic at Greater Regional Medical Center, 16 years as Union County Iowa Sheriff, 2 years with the Creston PD as a dispatcher, and almost 15 years with the City of Afton as well as serving on the Creston CIty Council and being a founding member of the South Central Iowa Regional 911 Service Board and numerous local and state boards and committees.

Dear Shelly and Council Members,

It is with lots of anticipation that I announce my tentative retirement affective June 30th, of 2018. After 45 plus years of public service and serving on numerous boards locally, statewide and nationally, I am ready to step back and let others take the lead. Since 1971 when I enlisted in the U.S. Navy I have worn a uniform and enjoyed serving the public in one capacity or another, including as a Medic for Greater Regional Medical Center, as Union County Sheriff or as Police Chief for the City of Afton
Hopefully with this advance notice it will allow you time to decide what to do with the position of Police Chief and to seek appropriate candidates and to complete the selection process.
While it has been challenging at times it has been a pleasure serving the City of Afton and I wish to thank you for your support, assistance, and cooperation in my service to the City of Afton.
