As summer starts winding down, many of us are beginning to plan those end of season chores, including getting ready to close our pools.

If draining your pool is part of your to do list, here's a quick reminder from the DPW to help protect our yards, storm drains, wetlands, and local waterways.

Pool water should be dechlorinated before being drained either by allowing the water to sit in the sun for 5-10
days without adding additional chlorine or through the use of a chemical dechlorination additive.

Whenever possible, pool water should be slowly discharged onto your own property in an area where it can be
allowed to safely infiltrate into the ground without flowing onto adjacent properties.

Pool water should not be discharged into any catch basin, wetland or waterbody unless it has been properly
dechlorinated, in accordance with the Chapter 176 Stormwater Management ordinance of the Agawam Town
Code (adopted June 3, 2024).

A little care when closing your pool goes a long way toward helping protect our local waterways.

Pool season may be winding down, but how you drain your pool matters. 💧 Before releasing pool water, make sure it is properly dechlorinated and direct it onto a suitable vegetated area where it can soak into the ground—not into a storm drain.

Responsible pool maintenance helps keep chemicals out of local rivers and streams.

The Suffield, Cooper, and Rowley Street Intersection Improvement Project is scheduled to start work on September 8th, 2026. This project will include: new traffic signals, concrete ADA compliant sidewalks, pedestrian signals, and crosswalks. It will also include: emergency preemption, a new left turn lane in the northbound approach on Suffield Street, new paving and curbing. Work within the roadway will STOP during the Big E in order to avoid any traffic impacts. The start date of the project was delayed due to a nationwide backlog in the manufacturing of traffic signal posts and mast arms. Work will resume AFTER the Big E and continue as long as seasonal weather permits. The project is anticipated to be completed in the Spring of 2027.

Some household products need a little extra care when it’s time to get rid of them. 🧴🔋 Paint, automotive fluids, cleaners, and other household chemicals can pollute soil and water when disposed of improperly.

Check your local disposal options and keep hazardous materials out of the trash, streets, and storm drains. Small steps at home help protect our waterways!
