For Immediate Release August 31, 2026

The Town of Agawam will be conducting a brief September 11th remembrance ceremony on Friday September 11, 2026 at 9:30 AM in front of Agawam Fire Department Headquarters, 800 Main Street, Agawam.

The ceremony will honor those who lost their lives in the attacks of September 11th 2001.

Speaking in remembrance at the ceremony will be:

Agawam Mayor Christopher Johnson
Pastor Tim Sheranko, Fire Department Chaplain
Rev. Stephen Thee, Bethany Assembly of God

It is with a heavy heart that the Agawam Fire Department acknowledges the passing of retired Agawam Firefighter Paramedic Randy Cushing. Beginning his career in 1977, Randy was Agawam’s first Firefighter Paramedic, setting the stage and the standard for the EMS system that Agawam enjoys today. Described by one Agawam official as the “architect of our EMS”, Randy was the first in a long line of skilled providers that built one of the finest EMS systems in systems in the Commonwealth. In addition to his leadership in Agawam, Randy had an impact on many other EMS systems in Western MA. Aiding them with licensing and system development, he worked diligently to ensure that communities could receive services that save lives and positively impact thousands of patients every year.

Any early report from a passerby and quick work by Agawam firefighters helped limit damage at an early morning fire today.

At approximately 5:48 AM, Agawam dispatchers received a call from a motorist driving by 420 Main Street reporting smoke coming from the condominium roof. Firefighters arrived to find light smoke pushing from the roof ridge and eaves. Evacuations were initiated with the assistance of the Agawam Police Department. A fire was quickly located in the attic space and pinpointed using thermal imaging technology. Because the fire was confined to the attic, smoke detectors in the living spaces had not yet activated to alert occupants, creating a dangerous situation.

B Group firefighters worked quickly to access the attic and extinguished the fire before it could spread further. One unit was heavily damaged by water and smoke and deemed unsafe for habitation by the Deputy Building Inspector.

Fire Chief Alan Sirois stated, “Attic fires in large condominiums and apartments can spread very quickly creating a serious life safety problem and resulting in severe loss. Thanks to a concerned citizen, and the quick work of firefighters, a larger tragedy was averted this morning.”

It was determined that the cause of the fire was an electrical malfunction in the attic. There were no injuries and one resident is displaced.

The Agawam Fire Department would like to welcome its newest member, Firefighter Paramedic Ryan Coots, sworn in on Monday. Ryan brings experience as a Firefighter Paramedic from Amherst Fire Department and is a graduate of the Massachusetts Department of Fire Services Fire Academy. Welcome, FF Coots!

In addition to the services outlined in Chief Martin's obituary, the Agawam Fire Department will conduct a stand out for the procession to the Veteran's Cemetery. Members of the public, firefighters, family and friends not attending the Monday service are welcome to join us for a final tribute to Chief Martin at 1:30 PM on Monday June 22nd in front of Agawam Fire HQ, 800 Main Street, Agawam, MA.

The Agawam Fire Department is deeply saddened to announce the unexpected passing of retired Fire Chief Stephen Martin on June 11 at his home in Berkshire County.

Chief Martin began his career with the Agawam Fire Department in 1982. He was promoted to Lieutenant in 1985, Deputy Chief in 1994, and Fire Chief in 2007. He retired in 2011 after nearly three decades of dedicated service to the Town of Agawam.

Chief Martin was also an original member of the Massachusetts Department of Fire Services Hazardous Materials Response Team, District 4.

We extend our deepest condolences to Chief Martin’s family, friends, and all who had the privilege of serving alongside him. His commitment to the fire service and the community will not be forgotten.
