"I am a firefighter.

I have seen burning death and devastation.

I have seen walls crumble, roofs fall, people’s possessions perish.

I have watched forests burn for days and nights.

I know that fire is a living thing that says and breathes, runs and rages.

I have walked in infernos, felt searing heat would my flesh, and smoke score my lungs.

I have had my life rest on my back, on the burden of an air tank and suit.

I have carried men, women, and children living from the flames.

I have born the dead from smoking ruins.

I have risked my life to save property, people’s way of life.

I have seen blazes, I have endured the suffocating dark. I have been blind and alone.

I am a husband, I am a wife. I am a parent. No matter what happens, how hard it gets, life goes on.

I am a firefighter.

I have made my life a service to my community. When the call comes, I must answer, no matter how tired, how sick; when I am needed, lives are at stake. I can never give up.

Every time, at every scene, I leave part of myself behind. Fire demands its price.

I have found true friends through fire, have stood shoulder to shoulder with them. They’ve saved me; I’ve saved them.

I have known complete and utter exhaustion but forced myself to take that next step, haul that hose a little closer. I can never give up.

I have endured the nightmares fashioned from the terror and loss I have felt from the horrors I have seen. I have been changed by fire. I can never forget. I will always remember.

When that call comes, I know deep down that I might not come back. Someday I might have to give my life so that another can live. I can never give up.

I have known the chilling fear inside that the fire might win, that I might not make the difference, that I won’t make it in time. I can never give up.

You’ll never know my name. In a world filled with communication, I often go unthanked and unremembered. I hope you’ll never need me, but if the moment ever comes, I’ll be there, always."

The banded badge- day 3
The aftermath

9-12-2001

The day after the attacks, our nation became one. There were no democrats or republicans, no skin color, no religions, uniforms weren't an issue...we were Americans. Flags were found everywhere. People came together to support one another and helped out in any way possible. The world saw us pull together as one and offered their support as well. We became one worldwide family.

So my badge is banded today because we forgot. We remember the tragedy, but we forgot we are One Nation.

Is it going to take another for us to become one again?

The banded badge- day 2
The day of horror

9-11-2001

The day started as usual, getting ready for work with the news on. The news anchor was her normal chipper self, this was before all hell broke loose. Drove to work listening to a cassette tape. My coworker was in tears as she walked in. She went straight to the radio and turned it on. That's when I found out. I remember the fear and anger overwhelm me. I saw the replay of the second plane hitting. Then came the news of the Pentagon and then the plane in the field. And later the collapse. So much death....

Today I mourn the lives lost.

I wear my badge banded for 3 days, for the next few days I'll explain....

The banded badge- Day 1
The end of innocence

Sept 10, 2001

Families ended the day not knowing the horrors waiting in the morning hours. For some, that was the last they see their loved ones. I mourn the loss of innocence that thrust into the hell we all endured.

How to protect your health from wood smoke Most healthy people have no more than minor and short-term health difficulties with wood smoke. However, excessive smoke can result in unhealthy or hazardous air quality. If smoke is affecting your health, contact your doctor or other health professional.
