IMPORTANT INFORMATION- PLEASE SHARE.
Hertford County is currently under a Tornado Watch until 7:00 PM this evening.

When severe weather is possible, it’s important to understand the difference between a watch and a warning, and what actions you should take.

Tornado Watch
A Tornado Watch means conditions are favorable for tornadoes to develop in our area. Tornadoes are not currently happening, but the atmosphere has the ingredients needed for severe storms. During a watch, you should stay weather aware and monitor updates.

Tornado Warning
A Tornado Warning means a tornado has been detected by radar or reported by spotters. When a warning is issued, you should take shelter immediately in a small interior room on the lowest level of your home, away from windows.

With today’s weather conditions, storms could develop quickly. The best way to stay informed is to make sure you have multiple ways to receive emergency alerts.

Hertford County uses the Regroup Emergency Notification System to send alerts directly to your phone or email during emergencies such as severe weather, road closures, and other public safety situations.

Signing up only takes a minute and helps ensure you receive important information when it matters most.

Hertford County Update – Perdue Feed Mill Incident

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
February 22, 2026

Hertford County Confirms Fatality Following Perdue Feed Mill Explosion

HERTFORD COUNTY, N.C. – Hertford County officials have confirmed that the body of the previously missing individual has been located following the explosion at the Perdue feed mill facility in Cofield.

The individual was recovered earlier today. The body will be transported to the North Carolina Office of the Chief Medical Examiner for formal identification and determination of the official cause of death.

All of our local volunteer fire departments have now cleared the scene. The incident required a multi-day response involving fire suppression, extensive search operations, structural stabilization, and coordinated recovery efforts under difficult and hazardous conditions.

“This was an incredibly difficult and emotionally taxing operation for everyone involved. Our focus remained on supporting the family, protecting our responders, and serving the Cofield community. We are deeply grateful for the dedication shown by our volunteers and partner agencies.”

— Christian Davies, Public Information Officer

Our thoughts and prayers remain with the families of the victims, our first responders, and the entire Cofield community during this incredibly difficult time.

Volunteer firefighters and emergency personnel spent countless hours on scene, many away from their own families, working tirelessly to ensure public safety and bring resolution to this incident. Hertford County extends its sincere gratitude to those volunteers for their dedication and service.

We are also deeply thankful for the partnership and support provided by local, state, regional, and federal agencies throughout this extended response. Additionally, we recognize and appreciate the generosity of our local restaurants and community partners who provided meals and support to crews operating during this multi-day event.

The investigation into the cause of the explosion remains ongoing. Updates will be provided as additional confirmed information becomes available.

Out of respect for the family, we ask that the community refrain from speculation as the investigation continues.

🚧 Hertford County: Please Stay Off the Roads If You Can 🚧

Good morning, Hertford County!
As we continue monitoring winter weather conditions, we’re asking residents to avoid travel unless it’s absolutely necessary. Even a small amount of ice can turn roads into a dangerous situation very quickly.

✅ Helpful Safety Reminders:

🚗 If you MUST drive:
• Slow down and leave extra space between vehicles
• Avoid bridges and overpasses — they freeze first
• Keep your headlights on
• Pack a blanket, phone charger, water, and a flashlight

🏠 If you’re staying home:
• Charge phones and backup power sources now
• Check on elderly neighbors, family, and friends
• Keep pets inside and warm
• Have flashlights ready (not candles)

⚡ Generator Safety (IMPORTANT):
• Never run a generator inside your home, garage, or near windows
• Keep generators outside and away from doors/vents
• Use carbon monoxide alarms if available
