Thank you to our community members for coming out to support our car wash fundraiser!!!

And Bravo Zulu to our Sea Cadets who all worked hard all day long in the hot Hawai'ian sun to help raise funds for our Battalion. At the end of the day, we raised a significant amount, almost doubling our fundraising goal! The funds raised will help support our Battalion to purchase uniform items and training equipment in order to help keep enrollment fees and overall expenses for our cadet families low so that all families can have their cadets participate without worrying about these expenses.

The R. D. Stethem Battalion League Cadets and the Battleship Missouri-Hawaii Division, Sea Cadets conducted a combined training drill onboard the U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Midgett (WMSL-757). The Midgett is a Legend-Class National Security Cutter (NSC) that specializes in maritime homeland security and is capable of conducting long range defense missions.

The cadets toured the Midgett and learned about its various spaces and ships functions from its own crew members. Knowledgeable Coast Guard Petty Officers and Chief Petty Officers assigned to the Midgett displayed their expertise and knowledge of the machinery, electronics, navigation, and defense systems that are utilized to operate this Legend-class NSC, the centerpiece of the Coast Guard’s Fleet.

The Midgett crew further challenged our cadets with training in at-sea search and rescue and lifesaving skills. Cadets were trained on how to safely retrieve a person “stranded” at sea using a training safety dummy. Cadets had to bring the stranded person onboard safely, securing the person to a search and rescue stretcher, and move them to a safe location for treatment. Cadets were then trained in medical techniques for conducting emergency medical care including how to take a person’s health vitals, recognizing symptoms of shock and hypothermia, and basic CPR skills.
After a long morning of training with some of the best the Coast Guard has to offer, our cadets got to know the Midgett crew a little more personally over lunch. The Midgett crew treated our cadets to a high-quality meal in the Midgett’s Galley, courtesy of the crew’s Culinary Specialists.

The USCGC Midgett and her crew provided our Sea Cadets with a truly unique experience and gave our cadets a direct perspective of their daily lives in the U.S. Coast Guard and the challenges they so readily and courageously face to defend our great nation!
